No Paci = No Nap?!

My sweet boy was CRAZY about his Paci. A good bit ago we took the paci away during the day and he only had it during nap and at night time. We had decided that once he turned 2 we would do away with the paci.

Well, he turned 2 and we had been talking to him about it for a few days just to prepare him. Friday night I cut a hole in the tip of the paci and gave it to him. He sucked on it for a minute then noticed something was wrong. He took it out and said, "uh oh, paci!" We talked about it for a minute then he decided to throw it away because it was broken. I told him that it was okay for him to be sad but that he would be okay because he is a big boy. He went straight to sleep that night with no problems.

Now here is where I need help. He used to nap for a FULL 2.5 - 3 hours every day. Now, without the paci, he doesn't nap at all! We still leave him in his crib - he cries, screams, talks to himself, etc. but no sleeping is involved. I'm okay with leaving him in there just so that he can have some quiet time, but he is a terror for the rest of the day because he is out that 3 hours of sleep he was used to getting.

Has anyone else had anything similar happen? Any advice for what to do?

  • Yes, been there.

We took it away for night time/nap time at 21 months and naps went from 3 hours to nothing to now 1 1/2 hours.  We put her to bed a half an hour early to make up for some of the lost nap time.

It will get better but never may be as good as it was!

  • We are in the throes of something similar.  I currently cosleep & nurse him throughout his nap (tuning 2 next week), but newly preggo boobs are not supportive of the 2 hour stimulation every afternoon.  I asked him to release today, and then just lay down next to me, which he refused, and I left him in his crib for 30 screaming minutes with no nap.  I've tried this once or twice a week for the past few weeks, but I will readily admit that I haven't been consistent, since some days I pass out before I can try to get away.  But in our house no boob = no nap :(. I'm fearful of sticking with it and ending up with no naps permanently which sounds awful.

  • Well I am the worst person to ask - we took DD's paci away about 2-3 weeks ago and she did not do well.  We made a big deal out of it, told her the paci fairy came at took it, left a present for her, etc.  She only gets it at our house....DC won't let her have it all and she sleeps fine there...and at home it MUST stay in her bed.

So anyway...after a week of non-existent naps and crying and screaming at bedtime, we gave it back to her.  Everyone that I asked said "what's the big deal?...she's 2.5....her teeth will be fine....try again in a few months".  So that's what we did.   And she's gone back to going to bed and napping without a peep.
