My 2 1/2 yro has a cough. I know we are not suppose to give them OTC cold/cough medicines. What do you do to help relieve the cough? The only thing my pedi says to do is give Benedaryl (this was last week when it was just in his nose). TIA.

Re: Do you do anything for a cough?
We do honey, a humidifier in his room at night (or maybe its a dehumidifier!? I can never keep them straight....), and I will still put Vicks on his feet and cover with socks at bedtime. Heard that method when he was a baby and have done it ever since. :-)
I have also tried the Hylands (aka homeopathic) Cough medicine which actually seems to work as well!
DS has gotten a really bad croupy cough a few times in which we have had to go to the pedi office for steroids.

I also do humidifier, vicks on feet, chest/upper back, and I give Hyland's cough- more b/c the kids like to have 'medicine', say they feel better & why not if there is some placebo effect... we will do benedryl if they're really nasally congested & it seems like it is postnasal drop causing the cough.
re the vicks on the feet, it is one of those unproven things... I personally wouldn't continue putting it on feet for my 3 yr olds b/c i think that the chest/back vapors are just fine but MH always wants to do it so whatever. I am not a fan of htem walking all over the carpets w/ vicks on their feet though & DD doesnt do footed PJs anymore soo... eh.
Ditto pp. It is an uproven old wives tale, but heck I think it works for DS! We have done it ever since he was a baby. It cant hurt though, right!?

so I slathered Vicks on his feet tonight, covered with socks and there was very little coughing before he fell asleep and none since he's been asleep...thanks for the tip!
