DD was born early so I had a preemie outfit ready but she was too long for it. I also had a preemie Janie and Jack outfit ready that did fit but it ended up being too cold so she wore a newborn sleeper home. I would take a few options with just in case.
My sister was also told my nephew would be huge and skip the newborn sizes but he was a peanut and we had to run to the store and buy him clothes.
Just keep receipts so you can return if needed.
I brought one each of size newborn and 0-3 months. DD was born on her exact due date and she wore the size newborn for about 2-3 weeks before she outgrew the length. She's always been greater than the 90th percentile for height.

I had a beautiful outfit in 0-3 months....but we never got to use it. I had complications and was in the hospital for a month. DS was sent home without me. DH just grabbed a 0-3 month sleeper to dress him in.

DS was smaller at birth than we thought he was going to be. He only weighed 6 lbs 0 oz but was 5 lbs 4.5oz when we left the hospital so he didn't fit into the size 0-3 going home outfit I planned. We ended up taking him home in one of the newborn onesies that I brought. This time around I'll bring a newborn and a 0-3.
