Jay Gordon Method

Anyone have to do it twice and never really get a solid 7 hours of sleep?  DD was still waking up, just not nursing, at least 2-3 times during the 7 hour window.  She never slept for more than 4 hours at a time.  That went on for about a month.  Then she got a terrible virus and nursing was her only source of nutrition, so I let her nurse as often as she liked at night for about 10 nights.  Can I do the program again with at least similar, if not better, results?

Any advice is appreciated.

TIA.

Re: Jay Gordon Method

  • This is us.  She still wakes up (most often it's due to a dream and she can't get back to sleep without some help but almost as often due to a wet diaper - she wakes up when she pees).  On a good night, she'll wake up twice - once to nurse, once for a diaper.  More often it's three times a night.  But it's still an improvement!

  • Both my girls continued to wake at night after night weaning. DD1 woke once a night until she was 5 yo. DD2 still wakes up once, we bring her into our bed, and she goes back to sleep. She usually sleeps okay after that. She wakes me up moving around but she usually stays asleep. Occasionally she'll wake up once more asking for milk but goes back to sleep okay without nursing. I just have to remind her she can have her milk in the morning, and then I pop her pacifier back in. I don't think that there's any guarantee that night weaning will help with night waking.

  • I don't see why you can't do it again to re-night wean.  As for the STTN.  Callum did STTN shortly after night weaning BUT he has had several "regressions" since - we didn't nurse again at night but that wasn't the end of night waking!
  • Thanks ladies!  I was worried I set off a poop-storm by trying to night wean again.  I'd love to get more than a few hours of uninterrupted sleep, but I'll take just getting to have my body to myself for a few hours again.  That month was nice for just that.

  • We modified it to fit our needs after following the recommendations the 1st time around.  We had to do it several times as, when DD got sick I wouldn't deny her nursing if she woke up...or if we were travelling and she was stressed I'd let her nurse, etc.

Basically all we did was set a time (10pm-6am) where I would not nurse, so long as we were at home and she was feeling fine.  She eventually learned to fall asleep without nursing.  That being said, it was still several months before she would STTN (and even now we can't guarantee she will always STTN, but she is doing so more than not).  We started nightweaning at 15mo, and then she started being pretty good about STTN around 18mo.  She eventually self-weaned around 22mo when i was 4-5mo pregnant.  I think I dried up or something tasted funny to her at that point.  She wasn't happy about it but she was even less happy when she tried to nurse and it wasn't what she expected.
