VBAC

back up scheduling a RCS...advice needed!

i am planning on a VBAC this go around with DD. my OB is on board, the hospital is on board, etc. but at my most recent appt. the NMW suggested i schedule a C/S as a backup because they won't let me go beyond 41 weeks. and this would allow me to schedule the early slot on a friday AM with the OB of my choice instead of waiting until 41 weeks and getting whoever was there that day at whatever time was left.

i am so torn. part of me thinks if i end up in the 41 week situation and having the RCS, id like it in the AM on a friday with the OB of my choice. why wouldn't i?!

but the other part of me worries that by even scheduling it i will have given up? i really dont want another C/S and have been relatively positive this pregnancy about getting the VBAC but i feel like i need to make this big decision!

so VBAC ladies.....schedule the back up or don't schedule?

  • Unless you plan on going longer than 41 weeks if it doesn't happen naturally or you don't want to/can't get induced, I would schedule it.

  • I would schedule it, it wouldn't make me give up, it would make me fight harder knowing how much I don't want the c/s.

  • I was due this past sat, and I've had my RCS scheduled for the past 2 months, for the 18th. It's not really giving up to schedule it if your provider will only go past a certain point, IMO.

  • I have been fighting this exact battle.  I cried ALOT but my RCS date is set.  I'm hoping that LO arrives before then but I just try to remind myself that although I want a VBAC badly and even if I do go into labor on my own, it could result in a RCS.  I've been trying to look at the "bonus" of having it scheduled for 9am (in my case) and hoping that I can at least go in well rested (yeah right - I likely won't sleep the night before...lol) and get to start my day with my new LO.

    Good luck!

  • I would absolutely schedule the back up. If you would go past 41 weeks, you'd have to have a c/s anyway, right? I think it's better to be on the schedule than to have them try to fit you in somewhere.

My OB wouldn't let me go past my due date with DD2. I had my RCS scheduled for 40w2d. Of course, I didn't have any signs of labor with her at all. I ended up with the RCS, but even if I hadn't been scheduled, I still would have needed a RCS. DD2 was even bigger than DD1. There's no way I would have been able to deliver her vaginally. (My c/s with DD1 was after failure to progress. I made it to 9.5cm before my cervix started swelling closed. She was 9lbs 2oz, 22", and sunny side up. DD2 was 9lbs 4oz, 21 1/2" and also sunny side up. I basically had no chance.)

  • I know someone who had it scheduled at 41 weeks, but she was already showing signs of labor (early labor, not necessarily 100% active labor) so they let her cancel her appointment to see how she progressed and rescheduled her later that week.  She ended up having a successful VBAC at 41w5d.

So, even if you do schedule it, that still doesn't mean you have to go if you don't feel comfortable with it.

  • I had the choice to schedule it or not (obviously).  I chose to schedule it.  My doula didn't think I should because she was worried I would feel pressured.

But I actually felt better because I was comfortable with the OB I scheduled it with (I saw a MW, but had to check in with an OB twice during my pregnancy).  I had a horrible c/s experience, and it actually made me feel like there was less pressure on me because I know that my c/s plan involved a really great OB.

I was able to schedule it around 40w, 3d by their schedule, but by my own calculations (I know my cycle length, which is 26 days) it was actually 40w, 5d.

  • Also, funny story.  I was at home snuggling my VBAC baby and I got a call reminding me to go in for my c/s the next morning.  Way to look at the charts, folks.
