hick ups

This may seem like a silly question but does anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of hick ups? My newborn gets them all the time, they wake her up in her sleep, and gets them all the time after nursing.  I tried holding her upright, burping her for long times, and using a paci, Nothing seem to help, and they get her really upset when she is trying to sleep.  Any other suggestions?

Re: hick ups

  • Gripe water helps our LO with the hiccups. He gets them daily too.

  • try putting her on her tummy
  • I give my LO a little breastmilk.
  • They're totally normal and chances are they bother you more than LO :) I've noticed however they usually go away with a feeding.

ETA:Sorry, just re-read that they wake her up and bother her. Do you swaddle? If not I would definitely do that.

Same here. Gripe water has really made a difference the last few days.

  • Gripe water, or nurse her again.  Hiccups never bothered DS when he was a newbie, but they seem to bother DD --- she wants to nurse when she has them, and they go away pretty much as soon as my milk lets down.  I haven't tried gripe water yet b/c we don't have any in the house.

  • They go away within one in of nursing. And of course they come after she is done nut I still pop her back on just to get rid of them for her. Works every time.

  • Gripe water!
  • My DD cries and gets really upset when she gets the hiccups. She had open heart surgery and is still healing, so I am guessing that the hiccups actually hurt her. I have been popping DD on the boob when she gets the hiccups. It usually works to get rid of the hiccups. I might have to give Gripe Water a try too as she doesn't always want the boob.

  • The paci helps my LO. It's the same reason why feeding helps - it gets them to create saliva and increases the swallowing. This typically gets rid of the hiccups.

  • Thanks everyone. I have never heard of Grape water, will have to try it. For those of you who asked, yes I am BF and most of the time I have to nurse her to get her back asleep, to only minutes later she has them again. I also swaddle which I think also helps.  She loves to suck on the paci but every time she has a hick up the paci falls out and I found this really upsets her.

  • My twins get the hiccups after nearly every feeding, NICU nurse had explained to me that it was normal. The opening to their stomach from the esophagus isn't strong enough. This is also why hiccups can be a sign of reflux. Because that opening isn't strong, it can mean that the contents of their stomach won't stay down and they spit up. Looks like you have some good suggestions, good luck!
