Food Allergy

would you ask for allergy testing?

My LO is 13 months.  I have been breast feeding until 3 weeks ago I started introducing whole milk.  Since then my little guy seems irritable and has diarrhea.  This was not a problem before.  Would you ask for allergy testing?  I am not really sure I can just go back to BFing... I think my supply has decreased.

Re: would you ask for allergy testing?

  • Yes.  It's possible your LO is not allergic but maybe just intollerant which will not show up in an allergy test (at least i don't think it will).  I would still get her tested just to make sure it's not something serious, but still do your own test. Change her milk to soy, rice milk, hemp milk, coconut milk, almond milk...  just make sure it's fortified and you will be fine.

NOTE: more than 50% children that are allergic to cows milk are also allergic to soy milk. So i would avoid soy in the begining also.

    there are many many options.

my DS1 is allergic to milk/eggs/nuts and drank rice mlk from 1 to 2 y/o and then stopped. So now he just drinks fortified juices. Takes a suppliment and he's fine.  My DS2 is 10 months old and even though he's not allergic to cows milk, we will not offer it to him.  We'll probably put him on fortified coconut milk.

  • ALSO! if you choose almond milk -make sure she's not allergic to nuts!

  • I saw on Dr. Oz that if you give your child rice milk to make sure you rotate other kinds of milk too....there is arsenic in rice and don't want to give too much to your LO.

i just recently saw that on cnn. scary since rice is such a big part of ones diet.  I would go with coconut milk or almond milk -those will be my two choices for DS2
