Food Allergy

Rice milk ?

LO has a dairy allergy, so when he turned 1, I couldn't put him on WCM.  He's still BF, so he's getting the nutrients from that, but I'll be starting back to work in a couple weeks and won't be able to pump - though I plan to try to nurse him in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings as long as my supply will allow.   I've tried giving him soy milk and almond milk - both were no-go's, I think because of the texture.  Since they're thicker than BM, I don't think he really liked them.  I bought some Rice Dream to try, and he seemed to like the small taste of it that I gave him.  I tried it and it tastes a lot creamier than soy milk and almond milk, and it's thinner like BM.  Anyone have any experience using Rice Milk for a dairy allergy?  I noticed the one I got - the enriched one - has the same amount of calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin D as WCM.  If I use the Rice Milk, will I need to give him a vitamin supplement - if so, which ones are recommended?

So there's this boy. He kinda stole my heart. He calls me "Mom"

Re: Rice milk ?

  • we gave my son rice milik from 1 to 2 y/o and then he lost interest.  Fortified rice milk is just fine.  it does lack a little fat so i made sure i fed my son fatty foods. (avocados were in everything we served him).

If you still nurse him once or couple of times a day and rice milk during the day than that's plenty of calcium for him.

When my DS1 turned 2, i started giving him vegan calcium gummy bears.  But at 2 he also didn't drink any milk. He drinks fortified juices instead.  His calcium levels are just fine.

  • Personally, I would not give it to my LO because I would be concerned about arsenic levels.  I think you will be fine to continue BFing.  Your supply is well established.  Offer water for thirst when you are not around.

  • My son has a dairy allergy and was breastfed and I pumped him bottles until he was 14 months. I tried soy and rice milk and he prefered the rice milk. I think that had to do with the consistency of the rice milk. I wanted to try the almond milk but he also has a nut allergy so that was out of the picture. I haven't given him a vitamen supplement yet, but I think we he turns 2 I will try the gummy or flinstone vitamins

  • We did rice milk for a while too...then tried oat milk and finally settled on almond milk...I think my son disliked that the rice milk was thin...but to each there own...we bake with rice milk more than the almond milk since its tends to not affect the overall flavor of the dish

we occassionally do soy milk - but since he grew out of that allergy at 2.5yo, it isn't our go to drink - plus i'm more concerned about the estrogen in that than the arsenic in the rice milk - but everything in moderation at this point for us...since my son is so skinny...
