the frustrated phase?

My daughter used to be able to entertain herself with her activity gym or Exersaucer for at least 10 minutes at a time. Not that I'd leave her alone all the time, but it was nice to have a few minutes in the morning to put clothes on and go to the bathroom!

Now it seems like she's reached the point where her brain wants to do so much more than her body can. If I lay her on her back on the activity gym, she screams because she just wants to be upright. If a toy on the Exersaucer won't reach far enough to make it in to her mouth, she screams. If something she wants is out of her reach, she screams. If she wants something that is too heavy for her to lift or she can't grasp (like her aquarium soother) she screams. So basically if feels like she's screaming most of the day at this point. I miss my happy, giggly, easy-going baby!

Anyone else's LO going through this too?

Re: the frustrated phase?

  • We did go through this with DS and it lasted about a week at most. He is a pretty mellow baby and wasnt screaming about everything that he couldn't get to work the way he wanted to, but I noticed that he would get quickly bored of things that used to entertain him for a while and would become upset, and also before he was able to coordinate his arms and fingers enough to touch/hold/move things about he would become frustrated. Once he got the hang of it he went back to being perfectly content and has actually become more patient with developing his skills and rarely becomes frustrated if he can't quite get the hang of something like he did for that short period of time. Now he just keeps trying until he gets bored and then moves on to something else without a fuss.

All babies seem to experience it but I think that the severity of their frustration and overall reactions vary based on their unique personalities.

  • I could have written this post.  DD seems like she is fussy all day long.  She gets adequate sleep so I know that's not the issue.  It's more like she needs entertainment all the time.  She hasn't rolled from back to belly yet so she's not entertaining herself on the floor anymore.  I guess the ceiling fan has lost its novelty Stick out tongue This morning I actually put on some kiddy tunes from the TV and danced with her in the living room to keep her occupied.  My calves are going to be a little sore.

  • Right now we are.  LO wants to crawl/move sooooo bad.  I put him down on his activity mat and he rolls over right away and starts whining because he wants to move.  I put him in his crib to watch his mobile and he rolls over and starts whining.  I put him in his play yard and same thing.  So I am trying to do other things with him, mainly get him out of the house and try to do 2 walks a day.... one in his stroller and one in his baby carrier.  I miss my chill little guy and hope this doesn't drag on forever!

  • This is my LO all day, everyday. He wants to do so much that he can't then gets angry. He can be inconsolable until you distract him.
