Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Help - I have a cat napper!

DD is 12 weeks, excellent night sleeper, but she only wants to take short cat naps during the day.  She takes 5 short (15 - 30 min) naps during the day.  I know this cant be ideal or the most restful.  Any tips or suggestions?

  • Hmm, my little guy was doing this ( I hope he's done with it!), until I realized that he was actually seriously overtired.  Apparently, waking soon after going down is a problem with babies who are overtired.  How long is she awake before napping during the day?  My LO an only tolerate 45 minutes or so, and he's 2 months old.  I have really been trying to get him back to sleep as quickly as I can, and it seems to be helping (although yesterday sucked!)  Is there a chance your LO is not sleeping enough?

  • Honestly, just roll with it.  There's nothing you can really do.  I took me too long to realize that I can't make a baby do much of anything--whether it's nap longer, finish a certain amount of milk, be happy, etc.  I would read books about what they are supposed to do and get super stressed and annoyed that my baby wasn't doing it.  Plus, people will tell you that their baby did this or that at four weeks.  The older that person's kids are = how completely delusional they are on when something happened and how routinely it happened.  It is a lot easier to accept that for NOW you have a short napper.  A few weeks or months from now things may change regardless of what do you.

  • Our DS is also a cat napper. He usually sleeps 6-8 hours at night, wakes up for a feeding & then back to sleep until anywhere from 8-10 am. BUT then he is up ALL.DAY.LONG.like 15 hours! Besides 15-45 mins here & there. He also is constantly in one of our arms. He doesn't really like to be put down. I can deal with his being awake now that we switched his formula & he isn't screaming all day anymore.
