bumbo seat

I have seen that a lot of people have them and love them, but I'm a bit confused about the use. Do people get them instead of a high chair for feeding, or do you still need to get a high chair also?

Re: bumbo seat

  • It's definitely not a high chair. I am personally not getting one. Physical therapists do not recommend them because they teach babies incorrect postural alignment.

  • I bought one, and it definitely wasn't worth the money.  Had I known, I still would have purchased it, but I would have done it at a second hand store.  Once they can hold their head up, I would put her in it sometimes next to me wherever I was, and the first few times we fed her we put her in it.  She didn't really love it though.

  • I hear some babies outgrow them fast but my son is tiny and he loved using to read or hang out in.  He still fits in it too.

  • Bumbo seats are for babies who can't sit up yet and are under a certain weight, so you're talking before six months and before the high chair. Once they need the high chair, they'll probably be too big for the Bumbo.

I would hold off on getting a Bumbo
for now. Some babies like them, others are just as happy in the swing or in a playpen. Like all of these other contraptions, it's just a place to put your baby for a few minutes of entertainment when you need to have both of your hands free.

  • Thank you, ladies! I think that we will pass on the bumbo. It seems like a waste of money to buy something that the baby will grow out of so fast.
  • We loved our Bumbo! We used it from about 2-6 months, until he could sit on his own.

Just beware, they now have to be sold with safety straps, so make sure you're getting the latest model if you do purchase it!

  • For us, the Bumbo was worth it. DD wanted to sit up all the time and we've gotten a ton if use out of it.

  • May be another baby-preference item.  DD hated it and always tried to roll out of it.  We had better luck with sitting propped up in her Boppy pillow, with another small pillow underneath.

In hindsight, I'd agree.  It did come in handy when we started solids because he was too small for the high chair.  The bumbo tray was nice because we got a couple of suction cup toys he liked to play with.  That said, I'd buy one used to borrow one.
