Anyone still making it to the gym?

Before I had my son, I used to go to the gym about twice a week after work. I'm not a big workout person, but I figured some was better than nothing, and it was something DH and I enjoyed doing together (he goes 3-4 times per week).

Now that LO is here, things are obviously different. Once my doctor cleared me to exercise, I started trying to do the twice a week thing again, but it's harder now. DH and I can't go to the gym together anymore--so if DH goes three times and I go twice, it seems like one of us is always gone in the evening after he gets home from work. THis makes it harder for me to cook dinner, and it's much harder for us to spend any time together. Plus, I'd like to pass LO off to DH in the evenings and do some little things around the house, and if I'm at the gym, well, obviously there's more around the house that doesn't get done.

So anyway, I can't decide whether I should stick to going to the gym or cut my losses and cancel my membership. ANy suggestions? FWIW, I'm almost back to my pre-pregnancy weight, so it's not like I have an unhealthy amount of weight to lose. If I go to the gym, it would be to maintain a good weight and also to tone up a little. Should I just accept that this isn't the time for that?

Also, does anyone have suggestions for exercises I could do when I'm home alone with LO?

  • I've started doing some of the videos on Blogilates.com in lieu of going out.  They are awesome- and tough!  I printed out the October calendar; it suggests you do 5-6 videos a day, I'm only doing 2- and certainly not 6 days a week!  But it's a start Big Smile

  • If I were in your position I would cancel the membership. Instead work out at home/outsde. Buy a medicine ball and a set of dumb bells, thats all you reallly need. There are so  many floor/home exercises you can do to tone your body every day and you can do them as much as you would like. Google exercises/read magazine articles, etc. Then when you do have the opportunity, go running for cardio. That is how I lost a lot of weight... since you are almost to your pre-preg weight, good job!!! I am too... 10 more pounds to go

  • I don't go out to the gym after having DD, instead I work out at home. I use the WiiFit, and do yoga.

  • I workout at home when the kids are asleep. Or when my little man is napping and my 2 year old is watching a movie.

I usually go to the gym when hubby comes home from work. I go back to work in 3 weeks so fitting in some sort of exercise will be tough.

  • I work out on my lunch break.
  • I have been going to the gym and working out at home. Its definitely way harder to get to the gym as much as I used so I use a few work out dvd's at home when LO is napping.  I say still keep your membership though because its nice to get out once a while and have some time to yourself, at least that's how I feel.
  • My gym has a daycare that starts at six weeks for $4/hr.  My husband and I plan on using it once we have 2 month shots done with.  For now I bought ankle weights and take walks with the stroller.

I am 41 and really need to lose about 45 pounds so I really need to lose the weight. Also I am not working and really have no time to "get out of the house except for carpooling DS to preschool and grocery shopping". I went for the first time today and I felt really good afterwards - working out at home does not leave me with  the same feeling. I actually joined the gym with a 2 month old and a 2.5 year old.  My goal is to go at least 3 x a week. I will try and get to the gym and be back before DH leaves for work 1-2 x a week and then go early on the weekend. I could do it when he gets home from work - a back up in case the morning does not work out but two nights out of the week he gets home late so we might be two ships passing in the night . They also offer free child care on designated dates /times so when DD is a few months older and DS is in pre school I might sneak some time in.

It seems like you might not really need it since you are almost back to your pre pregnancy  size. Stopping 2x a week really is not really going to have much of an affect so I'd say to drop it.
