Pregnant after a Loss

Third Tri Heartburn!!

I know this has been posted before but...mine has kicked in in full force when I lay down. Kept me up quite a while last night. I'm sure eating pizza for dinner didn't help! I ended up drinking a glass of milk, eating tums and trying to sleep propped up. Problem is, in order to prop up I've gotta lay on my back and when I do, I contract more.

Is anyone else doing something else that's working? Any suggestions? I know this is only gonna get worse...

Re: Third Tri Heartburn!!

  • I'm in the same boat - I pretty much wake up with heartburn now, and it's so bad at night sometimes!  (TMI - I've woken up many times choking on stomach acid...so disgusting).  I find that it's much worse at night when I eat a big meal, so I've been trying to eat smaller meals at night.  Sometimes a little milk or ice cream helps...not sure why.  Tums aren't much help for me, so I'm considering asking at my next appointment about taking Zantac/something similar (whichever is pg.-safe).

  • My heartburn was so bad I was throwing up from all the acid. My Dr. told me that Pepcid twice a day would be fine to take. It has been A.MAZ.ING! I take it in the morning and then again before dinner.  I still can't eat big meals at night, or I get heartburn when I lay down, but OMG, I feel so much better.

  • I'm not in my third tri yet, but heartburn has been killer for me this entire pg.  I too wake up gaging on stomach acid.  My OB told me that Zantac was safe, & it's been helping.  I only try to take it when I really need it.  A glass of milk, Cheerios (weird I know), or ice cream help.  I've also started propping myself up while I sleep.  Good luck finding something that works.

  • Tum...tu-tum-tum...TUMS!

Seriously, my heartburn has been killing me since the middle of second trimester. Tums help, but they don't stop it completely so it's a lot of just gritting my teeth and muscling through. When my diet changed with gestational diabetes it got a little better, but honestly it seems to kind of operate independently of any dietary choices I make for the most part.

  • Zantac and Prilosec are on the safe list from my OB. Tums is not strong enough anymore but I will take it if my symptoms are mild. I have taken Zantac when I was pg with DS and I take it occasionally when I know I will have bad heartburn.  Pizza, red sauce, anything spicy or rich creamy sauce will do me in.  I won't give up pizza just yet ;)

  • I also take Pepcid when my acid gets out of control, just make sure your taking the Pepcid AC and not the complete, my doctor said there is extra stuff in the complete that we shouldn't be taking. Also I find as far as going to sleep it helps if I have something in my stomach before bed so my stomach isn't building up acid all night. I usually I have a string cheese right before bed, it seems to work well and it's easy and quick to grab so it's generally my go to before bed snack.

  • My magic cure turned out to be gum.  I got sugar free fruit come and chewed it whenever I got heartburn or felt it coming...worked wonders.  If I knew I was going to have a bad night I would chew it before bed.

  • I had really bad heartburn with my last pregnancy/loss and besides Zantac, one thing that really helped me was papaya enzyme tablets.  I got them at the health food store, and they worked way better than Tums, and don't have that chalky taste.

  • I gave up on the TUMS a long time ago and have been using Zantac.  It has been working well.  I know this may sound crazy, but pickles also help my heartburn (I think it is the vinegar).

  • I second the papaya enyzme. Works a lot better then tums. I take one before bed and I don't even wake up with heartburn/acid reflux anymore. Before, it woke me up every night, bad enough that I would have to throw up.

  • Tums only help for about 15-30 minutes and my doctor didn't want me taking too many since he's pretty sure they contributed to my kidney stones with last DS. I take a Zantac at night and sometimes in the morning. I've been diagnosed with acid reflux during this pregnancy which can damage your esophogus if not treated. Milk shakes can help for a little bit too. I prop my head up while I'm on my side. I sort of make a ramp with pillow/my snoogle. I have one that is under my upper torso/shoulders, then another under my shoulders/neck, then a third by the time I get to my head, so I'm propped up about 7 inches total in a "ramp."

  • I am on zantac and it has really helped.  My MFM recommended it and I was super hesitant, but I am really glad I gave it a shot because I have been sleeping so much better.

Also, I second the milk shake comment- those helped a little too. Plus who doesn't want an excuse to have a milkshake? :)

  • I've taken 150 mg of Zantac 2 times a day for each if my pregnancies it is allowed and I can't live with out it.
