Any advice on how your connected to your office from home, sorry I need ideas

I am the first one in my office to have a baby , my boss is giving me the opportunity to work from home at least 3 days out of the week..but I have no idea how to come up w/ a solution...I supervise several things from my coworkers and also i have to check a papers there.... Other than that I would be happy to spend time w/ my little girl and work from home... I knwo it is a bit of a hassle, but I would love that!!!!  I don't have a set title, i am a bit of everything, supervisor for a/p, a/r, networking, etc.... any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • when i worked from home, i wish i had thw ability to videoconference. it was difficult to communicate when i was limited to phone and email. even in meetings, i would be on the phone, nd people would forget tjat i was there.

  • Do you have a second in command? I do...I check with him on a daily basis, he gives me updates.  I don't micromanage, I have to trust the fact that he's doing his job and that he's doing it well.  I live off my blackberry, so I skype, email, call from my phone and if I need to use my laptop, I pull it out the moment I get a chance.

My second in command get's overwhelmed sometimes, so I tell him to send me whatever he can't handle and it's MANDATORY that anything important or anything that he feels is above his head will get sent to me, so I can take care of it.

I do have an executive tittle, so I'm not worried about him taking my job--I make sure he's happy though.  I don't want him to feel that he's doing all the work and I all the credit.  I make sure everyone knows we are a team.  I have MANDATORY meetings every Monday.  once with the staff, and a second meeting with management to make sure we are all on the same page.

If I can't make it in person there are programs like www.anymeeting.com where everyone calls in on one number and enter a passcode during a set time I tell them too.

I work from home 3 days a week, sometimes 4, so for the past 3 years this is how I have been doing it.

  • If your boss is willing to pay for LogMeIn, you can access your work computer from any computer through the internet.  I did this when I would work from home once a week when DS1 was young.

  • in terms of title- how's Business Office Manager? Have weekly meetings midweek and ask your most senior person on your team to check in with you on Mondays or so and send you stuff. try and find a go to meeting set up. good luck!
