Affect on Supply

This might be a stupid first timer questions, but DH and I are planning to go out of town for a wedding, and MIL will be watching LO.  If I'm away from LO for a day/night and have no way to pump, will there be an affect on my supply?  Or will getting back to BF the next day keep it up?

Re: Affect on Supply

  • Umm, you will not be able to enjoy yourself!!! You will become super engorged, hurt and leak like flipping crazy. And I think it will affect your supply. Why can't you pump? You can buy a manual pump for like $20. Even if you don't wanna deal with storing and keeping your milk, you can still pump and just dump your milk, but you should definitely still pump every 3-4 hours.

  • Ouch. If I go more than a few hours, I am in pain. Get a manual pump.

Insurance covers a pump. Call and ask about it so you have one in future.
    I make cute babies.

  • I am 3 hours without pumping right bow, and I'm uncomfortable. I can't sleep more than 5 hours because the pain is unbearable. I recommend a manual pump.

You need to pump.  Pick up a Medela Harmony and use it in the bathroom.  Your supply could seriously tank, plus you'll be uncomfortable.

    Yup!

  • I doubt your supply will totally tank from one time but you will be in serious pain and risk leaking in public!!! You can practice hand expressing or buy a cheap manual pump like pp's said. They aren't big and you can put it in a giant zip lock in a big purse. I just used mine in the middle of a college football tailgate haha

I haven't used a manual, or even seen one.  If I pick one up, would I just pump for comfort, or should I be pumping 20 minutes on each side like I do now with my electric?

If you have an electric pump, why can't you take it with you?

This is a great manual pump. You will get free shipping since its over $25. THis is what I would take when I went out, taking the big electric pump was a pain. You don't have to pump 20 mins each side. Just do a couple mins each side to get rid of a majority of the milk every 3-4 hours. Have fun on your trip
