How do I know he has reflux?

My LO rarely spat up milk during the first week of birth and now he's started spitting up more starting this past Monday after every feeding. Now he just spits up after most feedings and is usually not fussy until yesterday and today. Are there some tell tale signs to tell me he has reflux? I'm not sure what to think as he usually is consolable and sometimes coughs when he cries and or has hiccups along with the spit up.

Re: How do I know he has reflux?

  • Are you BF or FF you may just be feeding him too much at once and not burping enough in between.

  • I am BFing. He wasn't gaining weight so my ped wanted me to feed him every 2-3 hours during the day and 3-4 hours at night.

  • How's your supply? If you have an oversupply, you might have a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. Easy enough fix, but Dr. Google and kellymom.com can explain it better than I can.

  • I BF and I could tell that what I ate added a lot to my son's reflux! He would spit up even two hours after a feeding. Projectile vomit....oh thats fun to clean up! He would arch his back in pain during feedings and while spitting up. Keeping him elevated for 30 minutes to an hour after feedings helps.

  • Two of my DS had reflux.  DS2 wouldn't really spit up much but he was constantly congested!  He sounded like he had a cold at 10 days old and it never went away, I didn't know at the time but congestion is actually a sign of silent reflux because the acid/food is coming up but not out and when it comes up it irritates the nasal passages causing them to swell and therefore the "congestion".  He was put on Zantac which really helped him and he outgrew his reflux by his first birthday.

And then my DS3 also had reflux.  His was a little bit more involved and long story short it turns out he has several food intolerances (He cannot properly digest milk, soy, egg proteins) and his reflux was a symptom of the intolerances.  I had to eliminate his trigger foods from my diet for his reflux to clear up.

Check out these links and see if they sound like your LO, and talk to your dr and see what they say:
