Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Forced to CIO?!

My 12 week old DD has always been hard to get to bed at night but lately it's gotten much worse even though we try to get her to bed with a pretty familiar "sleeptime routine" of dim room white noise, rocking, nursing, burp, sing, hum, very careful movement "no body moves,,,nobody gets hurt" type if put down, which often involves repeat. And Repeat:/
Lately my husband isn't able to soothe her whatsoever she screams her brains out even if all her needs are met, until she zonks out, I'm assuming by this point overtired.
No matter what we try, she screams in his arms, and I'm not home EVERY single night to put her down.
My husband is not emotionally evoked by this screaming but I am so I'm looking for advice a out CIO, this young, due to it being her ONLY method of falling asleep when I'm not there...
Also considering just having her CIO every night, now, in order to be consistent get her to the ultimate goal of just falling asleep in her own in her crib rather than screaming it out, in his arms until she gets what she seems to want: me.

Re: Forced to CIO?!

  • Not sure if you let your LO suck a pacifier but it normally helps my LO to calm down and go to sleep. I read where CIO at this age doesn't help them because they don't understand but each LO is different and if that works for you than that's what you will have to do.

  • Few suggestions for you, having been there...

you may be putting her down too late.  No matter what the sleep book I read they all seem to agree that 7-8PM is the optimal bedtime for all babies/toddlers.

Check her nap schedules.  If she's not getting enough sleep during the day it will be harder to put her down at night.

try to shorten the routine, for your own sanity.  that's a hard routine to keep up long term.

check out "Healthy Sleep Habits".  great information on what babies need by age.  It suggests that babies are not cognitively ready for CIO until 3-4 months.  Given your baby is 12 weeks I'd err on the side of feeling she's too young.

CIO was not for me.  I used the advice of "Healthy Sleep Habits" with "No Cry Sleep Solution".  You can google Pantley for the highlights of the latter.  DS1 is now 2 and we've never cried it out and he has a very healthy sleep routine, including asking to go to bed at 7 and enjoying nap and bed time.  DS1 still uses a pacifier for bedtime, and only bedtime as we've strictly enforced this, and it's worked for us, if you haven't tried that yet. GL.

That's how we did it with my son too :

I'm ALL for the paci, but she is still not good at any that I've tried but I'm still pushing its use:

I didn't know 34 months was even an option! Thanks! I'm going to try earlier bedtime quicker routine. But if all else, I'll probably wait to CIO for a few weeks....

My husband just went on a walk with her in his arms it actually worked! Not sure it's feasible long term but acute fixes are helpful too!

  • If you are holding her, trying to soothe her then it's not CIO. CIO is when you put them down and let them cry alone. Later, when baby is at least 4 months you can do sleep training with CIO but you can check in intervals. There are books on it, sleep easy solution. At 3 months IMO is too young to sleep train.

These two things. My Lo would scream at night when we were trying to put her down.  It turns out she was overtired and because of that nothing would work.  Now we put her down whenever we see the first signs of tiredness.  If she did not nap well we put her down earlier than we normally do.  It has made a huge difference for us. I personally dont believe in CIO before 6 months of age, when younger they cannot self soothe and it is unfair to the infant.

  • Your night time routine is pretty long. I agree with other PP to shorten it up and maybe put LO down a little earlier. I hope things work out!
