Working Moms

I am going to be working from home!

I asked this week if I could start working from home full time rather than commuting to the office and I got approved today!

I currently have an hour plus commute each direction. This is going to give me so much more flexibility.

Anyone who telecommutes have any good advice?

Re: I am going to be working from home!

  • Congrats!

I telecommute 2 days a week and I love it, mostly.

Best advice?  Get your work place organized really keep it nice.  Also, make sure that your family doesn't leave dishes in the sink in the morning, etc.  It makes me CRAZY to try to sit down to work in a house with a messy kitchen.

Also, I try to take our dogs to the park early on those mornings (before work time) so they don't give me mooney eyes all day. : )

Other than that, enjoy! Our office uses instant messenger a ton, so it is pretty easy to stay in touch.

The story on the other hand can never be lost from its place in the world for it is that place.” ― Cormac McCarthy, The Crossing

  • Congrats! I just started a work from home job about three weeks ago and I absolutely love it. I agree about keeping your workspace, clean and separate. I actually don't have my own office, but I have what I like to call a cloffice. Its a closet that I converted to an office in our family room. I can close the doors and it is all concealed inside. I took some time to paint the closet, put in shelves, file cabinets and decorate it with cute clock and lights so I actually feel like I am in a different space when I am sitting there. It's hard to ignore housework sometimes, but I make a point to only work at my desk, which I think helps. GL!
  • Congrats!  I've been working remotely for a few months now.

I agree, keep your workspace seperate.  I focus on work stuff in my office for my work shift, and then when i'm "off" i turn off my computer, and close my office door.  it helps me keep "work" and "home" life seperate, otherwise I know my laundry and cleaning/organizing would call to me and I'd never get any work done. :)

I also have to consciously reach out to people in the office, so I'm kept in the loop about things.  We IM alot and I call them every few weeks.  But, it's really amazing not to have a commute like before, so so worth it! :)

  • Get up, get showered, dressed, hair and makeup like usual.  Do not stay in pj's during the day.

Set up your workspace so it is defined and separate.  Keep it away from known distractions.

Take a lunch, just like normal.

    Congratulations!!

  • Ladies - any ideas on possible Work from home positions that are available.  It seems  you have to know someone that does it before you can really figure out where to find them.  I have a Master's in Economics, background in teaching college, accounting, business, human resources.  I currently work for the Farm Service Agency and would like to get into something a little more flexible with hours.  If you have suggestions I'd gladly take them! Thanks! You can email me at justinekougl at hotmail.com

With your background, could you consult?  Teach online?  Or do you need the benefits?

I WFH 2 days a week.  I'm thinking of ways to move into a contract position or into consulting for my current company and others, but I'm struggling.  I can usually see it pretty easily for others (I've mapped out ideas for long term consulting gigs for several of my colleagues) but I can't seem to figure it out for myself.
