Working Moms

HELP - I am starting to get nervous!

So I am 16w and I am starting to worry about what we do when my maternity leave it up. I have 9 weeks paid and 6 weeks unpaid. That is almost 4 months off (that gets me to July and I would like to stay home until September to enjoy the summer with my baby.

Financially, I really should go back to work but to be perfectly honest I am not interested in coming back to my current position. I am starting to investigate the prices of childcare and it is taking my breath away. So here are my options in my mind:

1. Come back to work full-time and use my salary to cover childcare.

2. Work part-time so daycare is more afforable, with a company that is flexible and open to my lifestyle

3. Do not go back to work, pray DH gets a raise, and stay home with the our new LO.

Can any of you ladies offer advice? Do any of you WM have a plan in place? I am a FTM.

Thanks :)

  • I never considered staying at home with my kids, so for me it is hard to imagine 'praying' for things to change that would allow you to stay home.

Part-time is kind of the holy grail of motherhood, IMO.  However, finding the perfect fit is something I have yet to see someone actually achieve.  Yeah, daycare costs go down (but less than you think) but so does your salary, your opportunities, etc.

Childcare expenses go down as the child ages, as you stay in your job, your salary generally goes up.  So yes, there might be 6 months to a year of working to cover daycare, but then you're in the black again.

I work by choice.  If I quit tomorrow, the bills would still be paid.  But for me, working is part of my personal life choice that I'm just not willing to give up right now.

  • Hi! I am only 12 weeks with our first and I am in the same boat as you! I am thinking I am going to take your option 2 route, part time at a different work place. My current job is very demanding. I don't want my work interfering with my home and vise versa. My only concern with this is; do you change jobs in the middle of pregnancy or wait until maternity leave to find a new job. OH and I don't want to forget to mention that my current position does not offer paid maternity leave.
