Solid woes

Starting solids has been a battle for months.  First he didn't want purees.  No biggie, so we started BLW.  When at 8 months he still wasn't getting the hang of BLW we went to a mix of BLW and purees.  He has taken purees slightly eagerly, but still would only eat about 1/3 a jar per sitting.  Which I was fine with, I figured eventually he'd have to eat more.

Now he doesn't want anything.  No "real" food, no purees.  He won't open his mouth, just tries to grab the spoon.  Advice?  Any other babies going through solids denial?

Re: Solid woes

  • DS had an issue where he was too interested in the spoon to actually eat.  My solution was to plop the food on his tray and let him feed himself (and hiding the spoon).

Don't be too concerned about them not eating much.  From what I was told from a baby nutritionist, breastmilk/formula should remain the main source of nutrition during the first year and sometimes the second year depending on the LO.

As for the texture, best you can do is keep offering some chunky food or whole softer food like banana or baked squash.  As awful as it sounds, gagging is part of learning about food.  My DS is ahead of the curve on eating, but he still gags a couple times a feeding.  No biggie.  Letting your DS feed himself may also help him be more willing to try something.

  • My DD is the same way.  Usually she slides whatever I put on her tray and "gives" it to the dog.  She's ok with purees, but has no interest in anything else.  We've tried puffs, yogurt melts, sliced bananas, sliced mandarin oranges, tiny bits of cheese and NOTHING.

I fear we will have the kid who doesn't know what to do with her cake at her first birthday.  I'll have to puree it and feed it to her on a spoon Tongue Tied

  • Sorry you are going through this.  I give LO a second spoon or a cucumber stick to play with if I'm using a spoon to feed him.  It keeps his hands busy.

There have been a few times when he has no interest in solids.  I think it is when his gums hurt particularly badly from teething.

  • I wouldn't worry about it as much as I know how frustrating it is. My DD goes through phases. No solids at all then likes purees, then won't take them at all. Or she'll eat at my moms just fine, but won't take anything at home. Or what we are dealing with (and this is abosolutely not to rub it in) she will only eat chunks of meat. But then only meat, no veggies of any kind. She went through a two week phase where the only solid she'd have was chicken. You tried sneaking in anything else and she'd spit it right out and would be done for the day.

I totally envy Library Chicka and her food stealing little girl :)
