Preemies

::PhillyGal34:: re:solids

My ped told me they go by adjusted age only for development, so for feeding we'd go by actual. My LO is 10lbs and currently taking 4oz bottles. She'd like him to be taking 5oz bottles before we start solids because his formula intake will drop. I told her we wanted to do BLW and start straight to solids (no rice cereal) but it sounded like she's thinking purees.  She said to start with one adult tablespoon once a day and we'll go from there. We will have to watch because our LO is still very gassy and solids she said will "bind him up" even more. So I have to do a little more research on BLW because I don't think he's quite ready to start that and that's the route I'd prefer to take.

  • Thanks! I am looking into BLW as well but think I'm going to do a combination of that and purees... I have a few friends who have done that with success.  I'm interested in what my doctor will say next friday... I have a feeling they will say that we can start then whenever we think he is ready but I think we will wait another month unless DH really pushes it.  DS is ebf so I'm not sure if they will say anything about how much he is eating but he's already 12 pounds so he is definitely gaining!

    Thanks for letting me know.. if you want I can update you after my appt!

  • I'm thinking I might do a combo as well since it might be a while before he hits all "ready" indicators for BLW. I wasn't going to attempt til next month myself. But my ped is thrilled with his progress - "you can't even tell he was a preemie!"

    I'd love to hear what your ped has to say as well.

  • OP - how often does your LO eat and how much total.  I only ask because my DD eats a 5oz bottle right away and then 4oz bottles the rest of the day.  She eats every 2-2.5 hours and totals 24-27oz a day.  She is probably close to 13 and a half pounds.

    I would also like to do more BLW but don't know if she will meet all the developmental milestones by 6 months, although she is on track with full term babies her age.  I know solids shouldn't replace meals until closer to 1 so I worry about her not getting enough calories/nutrients if she is filling up on solids.

    He takes 7-8 bottles a day. His first bottle is usually about 5oz and then he eats every 2.5-3 hours (he gets one long stretch after midnight) for a total of between 25-28oz. My ped said we should be increasing about an ounce a week - so now that he's 5 weeks adj we should increase by half an oz for a couple days and if he takes it well we'll be at 5oz by the end of the week.

    I think the filling up on solids is part of the reason my ped said to start slow with only 1 tablespoon a day. But I've also heard you can give LO the bottle and then try the solid - that way they get the BM/formula, but can also get some experience with solids.

  • Thanks!  You just reaffirmed my reasoning for not starting solids at 4 months.  We are switching pedis so I will be interested to hear her take as well.

    We have tried offering more and she just won't take it.  But, she is growing and healthy so I am not concerned at this point. She's so tiny I know she can't fit much more in in a sitting.
