Relocating to the Roanoke area...any recs appreciated!

Hi Everyone!  My family of four is relocating to the Roanoke, VA area from Columbus, OH.  We have a 4 and 2 year old. I am working partime outside the home and would LOVE any reccommendations on preschools/daycares/peditricians...also any reccommendations on great school districts, neighborhoods, attractions, etc!  We will begin working with my husbands relocation consultant, but I would love to talk with other Mom's in the area, as we are moving to this area with no friends/family close.

Thanks so much!  We are so excited but very nervous at the same time!

Hi I live in Salem which is right next to Roanonke. The Salem city schools and Roanoke county schools are much better than Roanoke City. If you're looking to buy I have a real estate agent I can recommend. I've used her twice and like her a lot.

For homes I like the Cave Springs area couldn't afford this area when we moved here two years ago. I live in an area called Glenvar and its near a great park Green Hill park you should definately visit its next to the river has play ground and walking trails large fields and events occasionally.

My son is only 5 weeks so we haven't seen his Pedi long but I like him so far he's with Pediatric Associates at Lewis Gale hospital. But physicians to children in Roanoke is highly recommended. When are you moving down?

  • Hi there, I'm not a mom yet but I echo what the poster said before me about the school systems. I've always heard that Salem City and Roanoke County are a lot better. Glenvar/Green Hill Park is really nice. I live in Christiansburg, which isn't too far away, but have been through Glenvar a zillion times. I hope you like VA!

  • We are in the Botetourt area and love it! School systems are great. Convenient location and not too busy.

When I moved to the area there were not too many Mom's Groups so we started one on Facebook!

Feel free to check it out ladies!

  • I grew up in Roanoke County and am currently teaching in it as well. RCPS has a fantastic school system and is a great area/district to raise a family. :)
  • Crystal spring is a great neighborhood, although also pricey. The grandin/wasena area is more affordable and also nice, but it's really diverse. That's either good or irritating depending on how you're feeling that day. There are TONS of bargain houses around all over Roanoke and Salem. I'd advise buying while the market is friendly.
  • I'm in Blacksburg which is a little far but welcome to the area :)
