Natural Birth

Finding a Midwife?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the community and I was wondering if you had a midwife how you went about finding them?  My husband and I are planning on TTC very soon and I would like to find out options in my area beforehand so we have a plan. Is there a good way to search for this?  Google has not been my friend  : )

I also wondered how many of you went in and had a checkup before TTC?  I was planning on both of us having appointments since this will be our first child  Thanks!

Re: Finding a Midwife?

  • Thank you for the suggestion I was able tofind 2-3 in our area that should work well.  I've contacted them and am just waiting to hear back.  I'm also contacting doctors for pre-ttc appts.  :)

  • Google worked well for me, probably because there are so many midwifery practices in our area. Natural birth is a pretty big thing here. The birth center in our town also has a list of midwives that practice in the county, so if you have a place like that, then it would be a good way to get a list of names. We met with a few different midwives before deciding, so don't go with just whoever you meet first. Make sure you fit personality-wise. The midwife we settled on is actually in the next town over, too.

We didn't do pre-pregnancy check-ups or anything, but when I was in for a pregnancy test once (one of the ones that was negative) I made it clear that we were TTC and they prescribed me prenatal vitamins. So I would recommend starting those. :)

  • I found a midwife through my insurance. Initially, I was looking fo an OB that delivered at a specific hospital. I found a clinic that had both OBs and CNMs. Part of their policy was that I had to see a midwife first. After conducting some research I decided to continue seeing the midwives. They have been great so far.
