"Sandals toe" indicator of Down Syndrome?

Hello everyone!! This is my second pregnancy but first pregnancy past 8 weeks (first preg. ended in m/c). Anyway, this might be my paranoid-self worrying too much, but I wanted others' opinions.

Today my husband and I went in for our big ultrasound telling the gender of our baby. The doc said everything was perfect, the only odd thing is that the baby's big toe extends further out to the left than the others, often referred to as "sandals toe." Thus leaving a 'gap' in the distance between the big toe and the other little piggies. Do any of you know if this is a direct sign of down syndrome? I have read its a 'marker' for downs but was wanting more information and can't really find any. We didn't do the u/s at 12-15 weeks that tests for downs, by the way.

Thanks for all of your input!!

  • i have no idea if it's a direct sign or not through an ultrasound, but my son who has Down syndrome has a gap in between his toe.

  • I have seen plenty of kids and adults with and without Down syndrome that have a the sandle gap. When we had our amnio and they did the ultrasound I pointed out DD's and they told us it was a soft marker but nothing to worry about.

DD does have Down syndrome and has the gap, but so do I and I don't have Ds.

  • Moreso than a specific marker for Downs, it is a common feature amoung people with chromosomal anomolies and abnormalities.
  • Lauren has Down syndrome but doesn't have the sandal gap!
