? About switching formulas

My LO is being supplemented with formula and has been using Enfamil Newborn. She is doing just fine with it, no problems at all but I have a big tub of Similac Advanced that I got for free from the company. I hate to see it go to waste so I was wondering if it would be ok to switch her to the Similac when I'm done with this tub of Enfamil and then go back to the Enfamil when im done with that or will it cause her tummy to become upset? She was being supplemented with the Similac when we were in the hospital just after delivery and she did just fine with it then. I had planned to EBF so I know nothing about how formula works. Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

Re: ? About switching formulas

  • We had two tubs of enfamil and two tubs of similac that we recieved free from the companies.  We started LO out with the similac formulas then switched to the enfamil formulas.  He did fine with switching to the enfamil sensitive but had issues with the infant enfamil so we went back to similac sensitive.  You can always try it out and see how your LO handles it; I knew by the second day his little tummy couldn't handle the enfamil newborn so I went straight out and got him similac.  After a couple of days getting the enfamil out of his system he was back to his happy go lucky self.

  • I probably wouldn't switch back & forth.  If you wanted to switch from Enfamil to Similac, then I think that'd be OK, but too much change may upset her tummy.  With DS, we started w/ Enfamil b/c that's what he had in the hospital, but he was so spitty and we had all the Similac samples, so we switched & he did fine.  We even mixed in some of the Similac Sensitive b/c we had sample cans of that too.  Eventually we even went to the generic version.  With DD, she's been on Similac from the beginning, and I tried to switch her early to the Up & Up brand of the same and it made her constipated so we went back to the "real" stuff.  While it's not going to "hurt" her to try to switch, I think babies are happier with consistency until their tummies get a little more mature.  Good luck!

  • I think it's specific to your baby. Some are able to switch, no problem, and others don't tolerate it well. You'll just have to see what happens.
