Fostering while on disability? SSDI

Anyone have any experience with this? In my opinion, the money you receive isn't income since it should be used to support the child(ren) but does anyone know if SSDI (solely based on your disability, not SSI which is based on your income) counts it as income? If they did, then I wouldn't be able to do it as they would reduce my income.

Thanks.

  • considering that you dont have to claim foster care stipends on your taxes, i cant imagine you'd have to disclose it to SSDI or that they would consider it income.  But since its probably a very uncommon scenario for them you may have to fight it.

and pp is right, in the process of getting licensed the state/agency will def need to know more about your disability...just something to be prepared for.

FYI:  If you provide respite care, you are supposed to claim that income on your taxes.  If you make a certain amount of money ($600, I think), the county will send a tax form.  We had it happen a couple of years ago when we provided regular respite care for a sibling group.  We had to fill out self-employment forms as a part of our taxes.

    good to know!

  • I would worry more about if the Dr. will give you a medical reference. Also, since you just got remarried and have a newborn, they may want you to wait.
