FLAT HEAD/GOOD SLEEPER

Okay.... over paranoid Mama here!!

Ethan had his two month shots and doctor mentioned what I have noticed already that lo is starting to get a flat spot in the back of his head. Anyone else notice their little one with this?

I baby wear during the day and when he naps I let him sleep on me. However, Ethan goes to bed around 9pm and will sleep until 4am. Then feeds and go back down again till 7-8am. We are very blessed with  the sleeping habits however we try to turn his head every night to the left or right and he continues to turn his head and face the ceiling.

Dr. said to turn his on his side by proping him up with a rolled up blanket in his crib. I am afraid though that with him being swaddled in the miracle blanket that he may roll over from being propped up.

Anyone else have this problem. Anyone's lo still using the roc and play to sleep in? I have thought about going back to the roc and play and using the boppy noggin pillow to help with the spot on his head however he doesn't sleep as well in the roc and play as he does in the crib.

Advice?

Thanks a bunch!

Re: FLAT HEAD/GOOD SLEEPER

  • I never worried about this. But...my kid still has a flat head and he turns two in two weeks. He never turned his head when he slept. Ever. The doc said it would round out. It didn't. Oh well. Whatevs. He's still the most handsome kid ever.

I'm curious to see other responses. We were also at the pediatrician today for DS's 2 month shots and the doctor mentioned that DS's head looks a little flat on one side.

Did the doctor say what to do? I am very worried as a first time mama. Lo is starting daycare tomorrow and I have them using the boppy noggin pillow and positioning him on his side while sleeping in the crib but during the day its fine because he can be supervised but at home at night time he can't be supervised and I am worried he will roll over on his face with being postioned and all.

I am curious what other mom's think and have done with their other children.....

  • My daughter also sleeps a lot, and the Pedi mentioned that her head is flattening. She advised us to put her on her tummy any time she is awake. This is not always possible, but we do our best. She was sleeping mostly in her rock n play, but I'm now trying to mix it up between crib and pack n play too. Some people feel that the positioning of the rock n play can cause flat head. It's tough to know what's best and very worrisome as a first time mom.
  • i got nothing for you OP, but holy guacamole is that one cute kid you have!

  • My mom is a physical therapist and constantly lectures me on how to move him so that he doesn't get a flat head. She comes over every other day to visit and "works him out," making sure he moves his head, tummy time, things I do all day that she apparently needs to do again. She told me she's treating a lot of babies for lack of muscles in their neck currently because now everything is sold inclined, so babies don't have to support their own head anymore...it's done for them. Luckily (for him, not for me!), DS hates to be anywhere but in our arms or sitting on our laps.

I'd just make sure you're changing his position throughout the day. Maybe have him nap in the RNP and sleep at night in the crib? DS naps in the swing, sleeps at night in the bassinet. We constantly have him out too, playing with him and what not.
