Object permanence

I know they say they don't get object permanence until 6 months (maybe I'm wrong?) but I'm pretty positive my LO gets it. When I walk out of the room, she keeps looking in the direction that I left from as if she's waiting for me to come back and understands I still exist in that area. Is there a way to test to see if they get it?

Re: Object permanence

  • The only tests that I know require that LO be able to remove a blanket/towel off a toy that's hidden under it. I'm not sure that our kids are capable of that yet, but who knows! There's also this experiment with a younger baby (where you hide the toy for them), but it's hard to tell whether the baby's really done looking because the video cuts out so quickly. You can always try!

  • I think they're at the point where they're working on it, but maybe don't have a complete grasp of it.  DS doesn't get it at all.  If our dog goes out of his vision after he's been playing with her, his eyes get real big like: "omg, where'd it go?" lol
