DD doesn't let me hold her hand when we're out walking unless she actually needs my help walking over something. Because of this, I can't let her out of the stroller or out of my arms if we're anywhere near a street. Is anyone else's LO like this?? Should I be more firm about it or does it just come with time?[Poll]

Re: CPW: Holding hands w/ LO
He refuses to hold my hand...so I broke down and bought a leash. I said I would never do it...but I did and outings are much less stressful.
We also let him walk on his own a bit, he seems to understand he can't get to far away from the shopping cart in the grocery store, and at least stays on the same aisle we are on, so as long as he doesn't decide to climb shelves or do shopping of his own he gets to enjoy this freedom.

Vito hates it when I try to hold his hand. I will let him walk up and down our sidewalks a little, but I try to keep my hand on top of his head when we do this. Otherwise I tend to keep him contained in public places like the store, festivals, etc. He's becoming a runner so I need to keep him on lockdown! LOL.
Bell didn?t like it at first. Now she understands if she?s going to walk on her own she needs to hold my hand. Each time i put her down I'd take her hand, if she pulled away i picked her back up. After a few attempts she got the picture. She?d rather walk then stroll/carried lately so she been good about it.

I think I'm going to have to try that. Right now, she just takes off full speed ahead if I let her down from my arms or out of the stroller, so I think she just needs to learn the association between holding hands and being able to walk around semi on her own.

What Wendy said. A month ago, I would have said no. Grabbing her hand meant her bones turning into jello and her throwing herself on the ground screaming. I would just pick her up and carry her every time she did it. After a while it clicked that if she'd hold my hand, I'd let her walk. Now she doesn't fight me!
I let her walk a lot now, she loves the freedom. I usually still carry her in parking lots, but this is the first week I've let her walk from the door to the car at daycare holding my hand, and she has done great!
So yes, she does, but it was definitely learned behavior!
This is exactly how DD is. She knows if she wants to walk she has to hold my hand so she usually does now.

How does your daughter do when put back in the stroller? I'm not sure how my son would react to getting back in once he's been out walking on his own. I guess I don't want to give him the freedom of being out of the stroller if there is a good chance I would have to take it away.
