CPW: Holding hands w/ LO

DD doesn't let me hold her hand when we're out walking unless she actually needs my help walking over something. Because of this, I can't let her out of the stroller or out of my arms if we're anywhere near a street. Is anyone else's LO like this?? Should I be more firm about it or does it just come with time?[Poll]

Re: CPW: Holding hands w/ LO

  • He refuses to hold my hand...so I broke down and bought a leash. I said I would never do it...but I did and outings are much less stressful.

We also let him walk on his own a bit, he seems to understand he can't get to far away from the shopping cart in the grocery store, and at least stays on the same aisle we are on, so as long as he doesn't decide to climb shelves or do shopping of his own he gets to enjoy this freedom.

  •  I don't let DS walk, even holding my hand (which he doesn't usually want to do).  In our front yard?  Ok.  But not when we're out and about.  He rides in the stroller.
  • Loading the player...
  • Vito hates it when I try to hold his hand.  I will let him walk up and down our sidewalks a little, but I try to keep my hand on top of his head when we do this.  Otherwise I tend to keep him contained in public places like the store, festivals, etc.  He's becoming a runner so I need to keep him on lockdown! LOL.

  • I chose ss because sometimes she is okay with it and sometimes she isn't.  It actually hurts me more than her because I have to stoop to one side to hold her hand.  I really can't wait until she is taller! ;)

  • Bell didn?t like it at first.  Now she understands if she?s going to walk on her own she needs to hold my hand.  Each time i put her down I'd take her hand, if she pulled away i picked her back up.  After a few attempts she got the picture.   She?d rather walk then stroll/carried lately so she been good about it.

  • Alexis was real bad at not wanting to hold hands. She started taking my hand to the fridge when she wanted something, that is how she started. Now she also will hold hands to walk with me. If she starts to pull away she is told o walk nice, I will tell her lets go and try to redirect her. I give her a few times then she goes in the stroller.

I think I'm going to have to try that. Right now, she just takes off full speed ahead if I let her down from my arms or out of the stroller, so I think she just needs to learn the association between holding hands and being able to walk around semi on her own. :)

  • I voted yes, but it really just depends on her mood.  So I really need a "it depends".  But I hate voting ss if I can help it.  Since, most of the time, she's fine, I went with yes.
  • He refuses to hold my hand, but it's not just a walking thing, he has never let me touch his hands. Even as a newborn he would cry if you out your finger in his hand. Putting my hand on his back to guide him has worked well when were out.
  • What Wendy said. A month ago, I would have said no. Grabbing her hand meant her bones turning into jello and her throwing herself on the ground screaming. I would just pick her up and carry her every time she did it. After a while it clicked that if she'd hold my hand, I'd let her walk. Now she doesn't fight me!

I let her walk a lot now, she loves the freedom. I usually still carry her in parking lots, but this is the first week I've let her walk from the door to the car at daycare holding my hand, and she has done great!

So yes, she does, but it was definitely learned behavior!

  • Evelyn doesn't like to hold my hand at all.  I might try the picking her up thing, but she likes to be carried, so I'm not sure it will motivate her.  I need to do something, because obviously it's a safety issue and I can't carry her forever.

This is exactly how DD is. She knows if she wants to walk she has to hold my hand so she usually does now.

    All of this.
  • Most of the time, yes. Occasionally he'll sit down and refuse to walk, though.

  • Here I was hoping that it might just come with time. I'm glad I asked before I created a monster. I'm definitely going to work on this. Thanks everybody!

  • I voted other. One twin LOVES holding hands, the other likes to "do it herself" and basically refuses unless she needs help.  The funny thing is that the one that refuses will at least hold her sister's hand.

  • DD was refusing to hold hands at all, so DH and I have really been working on it lately. DH took her the mall yesterday, he said she was doing really good holding hands as they walked around the stores, but he said his hand slipped for a second and she took off running right for the door. He got to her before anything happened but it does make me nervous.

How does your daughter do when put back in the stroller?   I'm  not sure how my son would react to getting back in once he's been out walking on his own.  I guess I don't want to give him the freedom of being out of the stroller if there is a good chance I would have to take it away.

  • We went on vacation about 3 weeks ago, and was very firm with her about 'holding mommas hand'. It was a fight for the first day or so, but now she does it without an issue. She will walk with me from the car, into a store- then I put her in the cart. She'll still grab everything off the shelves, lol. But this momma is VERY grateful for not having to carry her everywhere...

  • Sometimes Em doesn't want to hold hands, but I tell her she has to go in the stroller if she doesn't. She'll he my hand then. It just works for us.

  • SS - I don't know that I've ever tried. I'm usually holding DD3 while holding hands with my 3yo, who is holding hands with the 5yo. I can't imagine a scenario where I would feel safe trying to hold hands with both and not feel like I'd instantly be pulled in two directions - at least until DD3 is a little older.
