When to switch to Level 2 nipple?

DS was actually born in April, but was 8 weeks early and due in June. So I tend to hang around this board since he's more aligned with June babies :)

Anyway... have any of you changed to Level 2 nipples yet? I wasn't sure how I'd know when to do that. DS has been eating very sloppily lately (milk gets all over his chin) so I wasn't sure if that meant he needed a different nipple or if he's just messy.

Re: When to switch to Level 2 nipple?

  • We switched DS a couple of weeks ago. He was taking forever to eat his bottle so we figured it's time to switch. It took a few days adjustment for him but now he is doing great with a level 2.

  • 2 weeks ago I switched AJ to a medium flow nipple. She's had no issues with it.

This was us exactly! Our LO was getting frustrated and taking forever to eat so we switched. He has done do much better with bottles since then.

  • I haven't switched and am not sure when is the right time either. I'll have to ask the pedi next time I go.

I notice that when my DS is messy, it means he has to burp or he is done and doesn't want anymore. Maybe that's what's going on with your LO?

  • The bottles that we have (Born Free) actually have level 2s run from 3-6 months. DD needed to be switched at about 2 1/2 months when my mom noticed that she was sucking so hard on her bottles that the nipple was actually caving in! She was also getting really frustrated and barely eating, probably because the milk wasn't coming out the way she needed it anymore.

  • We just switched. Avent has one for 3 months so we switched to that.  She usually only gets one bottle a day but she has no problem drinking with the faster flow.
  • 2weeks ago... After DH did it on accident a few times.  LO will let you know if they are not a fan!
