Re: Balance Bikes?

  • I totally regret our trike and bike with training wheels, I totally recommend a balance bike.

  • we did training wheels with both my older boys and they had no issues with learning to ride two wheel bikes at 5 and 4 yrs old, with out our help. I think they are a waste of money. But I have three boys, so we have gotten a lot of use out of their old bikes too!

  • My son got one for his third birthday!  OMG He loves it and is insanely fast on it.  my neighbors think it is hilarious that I can not walk with him but need to ride my bike with him to keep up.  I totally think they are worth it.
  • Callum has had his for over a year and LOVES it.  He also has a trike and a 2 wheeler with training wheels but always chooses the balance bike - and he's insanely fast and agile on it.
  • DS got one at 18 months. He mastered it by 2, and was riding a 2 wheeler with no training wheels by 2.5.  Worth every single penny in my book.  We never had to do the training wheels thing.

  • I think it depends on your child. DD1 wouldn't have liked a balance bike. Up until last year, she used the brakes constantly on her bike (with training wheels) because she didn't want to go too fast.

I don't know if DD2 would like one. She loves her trike but hasn't master peddling yet.

I've heard people recommend to buy a regular bike and just not put the peddles on it.

  • My daughter HATES her balance bike.   She just never got the hang of it (and still has training wheels, so she just hasn't gotten the knack of balancing yet!) and just refused to use it.  It's been sitting in our garage until I find the time to get it to a consignment sale.  I think it really just depends on the kid.  I wanted her to love it and move right onto a bike with no training wheels, but she had other plans.  :)

  • I want to add... I think scooters are excellent for balance too.. once my kids felt confident.. I mean fearless.. on their scooters they started riding on two wheels too.
