Nap question...

Are any of your little ones seeming to want to go to one nap a day? My DD used to take a nap at around 9:00am and then again at about 1:00ish. She still takes her morning nap just fine...goes right to sleep and sleeps for about 1 hour to 1.5 hours. Her afternoon nap she just doesn't seem to want to take any more. She is happily playing and doesn't seem to be tired. I have tried putting her down at a later time in the afternoon, but no go. She just plays in her crib, sings, etc.She goes to bed at 8:00pm and sleep until 6:30am.

Does she just not need an afternoon nap any more? Any of your LOs doing the same thing? I asked my mom but she said I was never a good napper and she didn't remember.

Re: Nap question...

  • We have no morning nap.  Just an afternoon nap.  Violet wakes up between 7:30-8:30 and takes a nap around 12:30 and will sleep to 4-4:30(I know) she is then up until 10pm or so.

  • Hi:)

My DS is doing exactly as you describe.  I've been trying to wake him in the morning and limit his morning nap...it works some days and not others.  My latest idea is to wake him, limit his morning nap to 1 hour, and wait 4 hours to put him down for his afternoon nap.

I want to wait it out a couple weeks to make sure it's not a phase.  If he continues to resist his afternoon nap I'm going to move him to a 1 nap schedule.  11 months seems a bit young though...

FYI, I didn't just make up those things I'm trying, I got them from Ferber and Weissbluth...

  • At daycare, DD takes one nap from about 12:30 - 2ish.

On weekends, she's a nap beast and we have to trick her into catnaps in the stroller. From time to time we can get her down for about 30 minutes in her crib. Since she's successful at daycare, I have to assume this is something I'm doing wrong.

  • patchen30, I was thinking of doing the same thing!

Thanks for your responses, everyone! It seems so young to go to just 1 nap...my nephews were still taking 2 naps until they were about 2. But I know every child is different!

  • His nap schedule has changed at DC, for the past two weeks or so he has only been taking a quick nap in the morning, and maybe a one hour nap in the afternoon.  He's really tired by 7:30 or so, which is bedtime.
  • DS has been taking 1 nap now for about 2 months or more. It works well for him. He gets up about 6:30am, naps from 12:30-2:30/3 then goes to bed at 8:30. If he takes 2 naps then his whole night is messed up, he goes to bed way late and is up at 3am for the day.

While 1yr old is a little early for most babies, some drop them. My 2yr old dropped her 2nd nap at 15 months. I don't know of many 2yr olds who still take 2 naps.

  • DS fights the afternoon nap but he needs it.  When DD was a year old she tried to drop a nap too and ended up sleeping terribly at night because she was over tired. DS is the same way so we are making him CIO in the afternoon until he does sleep.  DD was actually ready to drop her second nap around 16 months.  The doctor said that if the baby is sleeping well at night and down to one nap then they are ready to drop the nap.  If they aren't make them nap.

  • Wow!  I guess my little guy is a nappin' fool.  He's up between 6 & 7 every morning and needs a 45 min nap around two hours later.  He takes another nap around noon and then around 3 or 4pmish.  They're never more than an hour, but he definitely needs them.  He took two long naps the other day instead of the three.  I'm hoping that's the beginning of him switching to just two.  I couldn't imagine keeping him up until noon to take a nap, he'd be going crazy!

  • Occasionally DD only takes one nap, but most of the time she still needs two. On an average day, she wakes at 6am then takes a 1 to 2 hour nap at 8am. She has another 1 hour nap around 1pm.
