S/O Smoking...a ? on how to get smell out

A friend of mine gave me some clothing for my daughter that smells very strongly of smoke. I have washed the clothing twice in the washing machine with Purex Baby Soft detergent and fabric softener, once in a regular cycle and once in a long, hot cycle, then in the dryer with 3 Bounce sheets. I can still smell the smoke. I have the clothes now soaking in hot water and Tide (hoping that the Tide will work wonders). Any other ideas? The clothes are in really good shape and i'd really like to get them fresh smelling.

  • Hmmm... I'm surprised that the washing machine didn't get the smell out.
  • That's a pitty...
What'd she do clam bake with the clothes? Geez.... Try frebreezing them or that dryel sp stuff to dry clean at home????

  • I'd have someone else smell them to see if they really do smell or your mind is playing tricks on you, honestly. My mother has given us stuff that smells like she put it into a box with a small opening and blew smoke into the box.  Disgusting.  But washing and drying gets it out for sure.

Wow, I can't believe all that didn't get the smell out.

Yeah. Same. I just got a ton of clothes for DS from someone who smokes a lot, and I let them air out before washing them and the smell is completely gone. I just used Tide and a bounce sheet...

I was going to say this. I find that airing things out that my folks send to DS before I wash them does the trick. Something about washing them right away doesn't work.

  • I know she and her hubby smoke heavily, in the house and in the car, so it's no wonder that it all smells like smoke, but i thought for sure it would have come out by now. My mom mentioned soaking in vinegar, then washing regularly and air drying and it should be fine.

  • I remember reading an advice column about a leather jacket and smoke.  The advice was to air it outside for several days and the person claimed that it did work.

  • Hi!  I have heard that newpaper can help to get the smoky smell out of a car if you put it in and close the doors for some days.  Maybe if you put the clothes into a tub with some newspaper?  I have never tried it but it would be cheap and easy to try.

  • Just burn the clothes. We hate smokers and all things touched by them.

    No skittles for smokers!

Soak in vinegar and then wash.nbsp; And air dry them in the sun if you won't violate HOA rules and get ran out of town.

Ditto vinegar. That will also preserve the colors.

    I would suggest vinegar also.

  • Soak in vinegar, then wash.

DH smokes and I've had to do this with some of his stuff that's been in his car too long or something and the smell has really seeped in.
