Know of any good ones? We are going trekking through Asia and I will need a carrier but DS is 45lbs and very tall. My Ergo says it goes up to 60lbs but I've been doing a few test runs and I can't carry DS comfortably for more than 15-20 minutes. Is my only option a structured backpack? Any recs? I'm very petite, btw. Maybe I just need to build up my stamina and use the Ergo??
Re: carrier for 45+ lbs child
Another vote for a kinder pack. There's a FSOT page on Facebook if you want to get a used one. They are around 160 new and they go fast when she lists them.
I wouldn't do a frame backpack. It throws off your center of gravity
What just happened in my diaper?!
Preschool Kinderpack - I'm pretty sure it's the largest bodied carrier that's easy to come by - way bigger than the Ergo! You will want the perfect fit adjusters (I think she's doing them standard now) or maybe even petite straps (depending on if you plan to share with DH).
I think you will also want to practice if you've not been wearing kiddo regularly. The larger bodied carrier will make a difference as it will support kiddo better but 45 pounds is still 45 pounds which is kind of a lot if you've not been wearing at all. Great exercise though

To answer this question...I actually prefer the fit of the Kanga over the Kinderpack BUT the preschool Kinderpack is larger than the Kanga XTP which is her largest size. For reference...Callum is about 36 pounds and maybe 40 inches (not sure!) - the preschool KP is knee to knee still and he is easily arms in. On the Kanga XTP, he is not knee to knee and can go arms in if he scrunches. If you did go with a Kanga, you'd want petite straps.
The preschool size Tula or Olives & Applesauce would be two other easier to find options - although I believe the preschool KP is still a bit larger (and is my favorite fit of the 3).

I wear DD (22lbs) all the time but you are right, 45lbs is a LOT! I plan to have DH do most of the carrying of DS on our trip
Hopefully, the Kinderpack will fit both of us and DH will find it comfortable, too. Thanks for the input.
