follow-up from dr...twins?!

**posted in 1st Trimester board as well**

a brief history of what's been going on:

I went in for my first u/s on Monday. She had me do some blood work because she felt it was too early to see the pregnancy age. She said what she saw on the u/s was approximately 5 weeks...which is what I think I am. She words "threatened miscarriage" was thrown around a few times...and said we just needed to wait for the results from my blood work to see what's going on. I tested on Monday and my progesterone came back at 33.4 and my hcg level came back at 20,560. They are happy with my progesterone level and said my hcg level is higher than she expected...(not sure what that means?!) I go back tonight to test again and hope that my hcg level doubles...

After emailing my doctor last night to get an idea as to WHY they keep throwing the miscarriage word around, she responded with this:

The high progesterone is very reassuring.

I think we need to wait for the lab from today to give us a clearer picture. Another thing it could be is that you may have twin pregnancy. I know this is a lot of info to process and make sense of. Unfortunately time is what I need right now to determine what is going on. I hope the extra information does not alarm you any way.
I should have the results from the hcg and we can get a clearer picture of what is going on.

Hang in there.

TWIN PREGNANCY?? Does that mean twins? The way she worded her e-mail with "a lot of into to process" and "hang in there" ...makes it sound like it's a bad thing.

I'm more confused than ever. HELP!  Did anyone experience this during their early stages of pregnancy?!

Re: follow-up from dr...twins?!

  • Why is she saying threatened miscarriage?  Were you bleeding? If so, from what I understand, that is always called "threatened miscarriage" even if they have no idea why you were bleeding.

The numbers won't tell you if there are twins, only an u/s can do that.  If your ticker is right (6wks, 3days), she should be able to detect twins via u/s.  If she thinks you are earlier than that, she should just schedule you for next week to take a look.  The rising HCG and good progesterone levels will just confirm a healthy pregnancy.

    Good luck!

  • the idea of having twins is a lot to process.  Especially when you are only expecting only one.  Financial planning, dealing with two babies etc.  Unless you get an ultrasound as a confirmation I wouldn't think about it way to much ( ya right?).  Do you have another one scheduled?  Did she see two sacs at all? She didn't really answer the " why did you say threatened miscarriage question?"

I have also found that the words "threatened miscarriage" is just something they put on anything that may seem off.  Especially if you go in to the office with an issue ( weird cramping etc).

  • i don't understand why the doctor would tell you that instead of just getting you in for an u/s. dumb.

  • HCG levels vary so much, it's possible that you just are on the high end of normal. If she suspected twins she could have confirmed by an u/s if you are 6+ weeks. Try not to worry too much it's confirmed.

I was diagnosed with threatened miscarriage every time I had any bleeding and went to the doctor.

  • I'm thinking I'm not as far as along as I thought I was....so they weren't able to see much of anything on the u/s. My next one is scheduled for next Thursday...so hopefully we get some answers then!

  • hCG may not double now that you're in the 20,000 range.  Just FYI.

    Only time will tell.

Good luck and keep us posted!

That's what I thought. I was going off this chart I was reading -- and I'm REALLY high for a single pregnancy especially with how far along I am....
