Thats the debate I'm having w/DH. Because my 5 week old son is doing just that.
Maybe its the problem solver in me but I don't think waking up screaming is normal. He is only calm when he's eating or sleeping. And during the day he only sleeps for 10 to 20 minutes and then he's screaming.
Here's what I've done. Fed him, changed him, swaddled him. Walked him, rocked him, put him in his bouncer, swing, on his belly, back and side. Burped him, sat him upright. Checked his temp, looked for diaper rash, called the doctor. Went for a car ride and walk. I know I'm forgetting something, but if someone suggested it I did it.
Whats wrong, is it really normal for him to cry all day...?

Re: Do babies cry all day long?
Does LO cry right after eating or during eatin? Is there any back arching when crying? It sounds like you are doing everything you can. Could be colic or reflux or a fussy/high needs baby... Also if you BF could it be something you are eating? If you FF could they have an intolerance to the Formula?
I would call your pedi. L pretty much cried if she was awake the first 2 months. She ended up with silent reflux, colic, MSPI (milk/soy protein intolerant) and had bad gas. She was put on Zantac, switched to a hypo-allergenic formula and we used colic calm, did colic massages to try and help.
Gl!
The pedi. thinks he's cluster feeding (I'm breastfeeding), my OB said it sounds like Colic. I will check out the Colic Calm. Unfortunately he does not like baths, I wish he did.

He cries when he wakes up until I feed him, breast or bottle, but when he's done he goes back to crying. He only arches his back when I put him on the changing table and try to give him a pacifier. We just started discussing my diet, today I cut out milk to see if that helps at all.

have you cut anything out of your diet? especially dairy?
ds was like this...i literally cried along with him because i felt so horrible. i ended up cutting dairy and soy out of my diet (which is so difficult) and he was better (not perfect). the diet was too difficult to me to keep up, so he ended up going on alimentum formula and zantac for his reflux. now we usually only have 2-3 hours of crying each day vs. the non stop crying we had before.
also, do you have a wrap or carrier? some babies liked to be wrapped and have you walk around (not my ds, but it did try it).
~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~

A wrap is GREAT TOO!!!
Don't be afraid to keep going back to your pedi for help.
I third the wrap carrier. I use a K'Tan (similar to a Moby but already wrapped) and it helps a lot. The K'Tan + going outside normally gets her calmed down enough that I can deal with it. If she's overtired, she will often fall asleep in it. As much as I often want a break from her at that point since I've dealt with fussy, crying baby for hours on end, it's nice just to have some peace and quiet so I'll deal with her sleeping in it if I have to.
Lurking...
My first did this for the first 4 weeks and it ended up being silent reflux. I had suspicions (he would wake up gasping when he did get some sleep and it scared the sh!t out of me and DH), but our doctor (whom I love and trust) doesn't recommend medication in the first month except in very severe cases. Like some pp's said, I would often just hold him and cry along with him because I felt so bad for him. The first four weeks were torture - he would cry because he was hungry, eat, then scream due to the acid pain, then be overtired, fall asleep and wake up hungry again (crying) a short time later and the cycle would repeat. Some things that helped us were keeping him as upright as possible (I wore him in the Ergo all.the.time), laying him down in the rock n play (it has an incline, so he wasn't laying flat), and feeding smaller "meals" more often. I nursed and my diet (other than broccoli which gave him gas) didn't have an effect.
At his 4 week appointment, the doc prescribed Zantac and DS was a different baby after that.
