So, Adalyn has been eating Stage 1 foods for about 3 months or so. Lately (as in the last couple of days) she has started refusing eating so much from the bottle and instead wants to eat more solids. She's not sick, still has plenty of wet diapers, and still eats a lot. It's just that she doesn't want the formula and wants to be fed with the spoon.
At first we were freaked out that she didn't want so much of the bottle, so we put a splash of pedialyte in it (since it worked when she was sick) and she gobbled the bottle down. However, even with that now she only eats about 1 to 2 ounces at a time (when she used to eat a lot more).
Should I call the pedi? Should I make her eat oatmeal so that she gets the formula? Is it normal to start transitioning away from the bottle for solids? Is she trying to tell me that she's ready for Stage 2 foods?
I should also mention that she's teething bad on her lower gum. Could that be why she isn't a fan of the bottle?
TIA!
Re: S/O Solids...
How many bottles is she getting? Is she getting 3 meals of solids a day?
Its great that she is doing well with solids! And it does sound like she enjoys them, but at her age I think formula is still supposed to be the main source of nutrition, so I would assume that your pedi would still want her to have a minimum amount of ounces per day.
Once we introduced 3 meals a day it was clear that solids were a significant part of her nutritional intake. She almost immediately dropped from 6 bottles/breastfeeding a day to 4. I was very concerned about the drastic reduction in # of ounces at first. She went from about 30 ounces a day down to around 20. She is now back up to around 24 ounces because she takes more in each bottle. The bottles have always been a struggle though. She gets easily distracted and we usually have to take at least one break. Have you progressed the nipple stages? My DD was much easier to bottle feed once we went up to a stage 3 nipple. She was a severe choker in the nicu and for the first few months at home so I was very nervous to make that changed but it made bottles much more pleasant for everyone.
I dont think the bottle struggles necessarially translate to the stage food she is eating, but with that said my DD did well with solids like your DD and progressed quickly to very chunky purees and even finger foods by around 6.5 to 7 months adjusted. I tend to add baby oatmeal to all of my daughters purees to add calories & nutrients.
