Preemies

solids...

E will be 4 months old on Monday... omg where did the time go??????? I've been looking in to when to start solids with him (and will clearly ask the pediatrician at next week's visit) and came across some sites saying there is a study that preemies should start earlier rather than later due to decreased opportunity to get nourishment in the womb and trying to play "catch up"... has anyone heard anything about this? is it BS? I want to be prepared with my own knowledge before I go to the doctor and listen to what they say blindly.

Re: solids...

  • I don't have an answer as I'm going to be asking the ped on Friday myself. My LO is a little behind yours adjusted but I want to see the responses

That's one of the theories out there, and it sometimes goes with the theory that a preemie's gut is primed earlier than a FT baby's gut to receive food, therefore starting solids earlier can happen.  The other theory is preemies should wait until 6m adjusted to start solids since it would be more developmentally appropriate (if that makes sense).  Definitely talk to your pedi, and see what they recommend.

FWIW, our pedi is in the camp that thinks it's ok to start preemies earlier/based off their actual age.  We got the green light to start at 6m actual, but I waited until closer to 7m actual when she started showing more of an interest in solids.

Ditto this.  We got the green light to start at 7 months actual (3.5 adjusted) but developmentally she  wasnt ready.  We started very casually  at 8 months (4.5 adj) actual and progressed over the course of 2 to 2.5 months to a full 3 meals a day.

  • i think it really depends on the baby. Our doctor said we could start trying at 4 months adjusted (7 months actual), but she wasn't ready. She started actually eating solids closer to 6 mths adjusted.

  • No problem! He'll be 4 months actual tomorrow, and I know he's not ready yet, but I like to be prepared. And it's a chance to feel out my ped about BLW and get my MIL off my back about starting to thicken his bottle with rice. "The doc said to wait..." :-)

i use that excuse for everything... even when the doctor doesn't say it!

  • At her 4 month appointment our pedi told us we were fine to start solids.  He also said he doesn't consider her a preemie, he had his kids on solids at 2/3 months.  We are switching to a new practice...

Right now I feel like I learn more from my own research than my pediatrician.  We are choosing to wait until at least 6 months before starting any solids.  I would like to do more of a baby-led weaning approach, but we will see where she is (developmentally) in another month or so.  She only takes 24-27oz a day which isn't a ton and she also isn't showing much interest in other food right now.
