Am I 30 or 70?

I've been doing insanity off and on for the past few months (not 6 days a week; maybe 4 or 5) and I have not had any problems until recently. 2 weeks ago, I hurt my lower back doing globe jumps. I took a week off and walked or did the elliptical. So I did insanity yesterday, and now REALLY hurt my lower left back. What is going on? I'm stretching and I think I have good form. What gives? I can't even walk today and I want to cry every time I pick up my LO

  • If you can't walk, you need to go to a doctor. You may have a serious injury that might not heal on it's own. In the meantime, you need to rest and ice your back where it hurts.

  • take a break from it.  I've heard programs like Insanity can really mess up people's bodies.  A friend of mine ended up needing to go to the chiropractor.  Its not worth it when you can get the same result from lifting weights and doing cardio

  • Buy a good foam-roller and learn to do self myofascial release.  It's like a deep-tissue massage (helps break up muscle adhesions and tight fascia) and will undoubtedly help you out a lot.

If you sustained the injury jumping, two things are probably going on:

    1.  Your leg muscles are probably too tight.  If they're not absorbing the shock of jumping and it's translating into your back, you'll need to stretch (and foam-roll) them well.

    2.  Your core (abdominals, glutes, hip stabilizers, etc.) is probably weak.  You'll want to work your deep abdominals (transversus abdominus) more regularly by doing extended holds of a variety of plank poses, as well as gluteal strengthening work.

  • Sounds like maybe you injured something and don't realize it....

OR - you know how Inanity workouts go STRAIGHT into the warmup before stretching?  Maybe try doing your own warm-up/stretch before staring?  I know that helps me alot because I was used to stretching first before going right into his intense "warm up"..... Hope you feel better!!

This - my husband owns a CrossFit gym and commonly when members complain of lower back pain it is more related to muscle tightness in the hips or gluteus medius and legs rather than actually related to the back.  Usually our runners are the ones with lower back pains.  But neither he nor I are medical professionals so definitely try stretching and strengthening first then consider seeking another opinion.
