What should a 2yo be saying?

How many words?  Sentences?  Phrases?

I know my son has always been a bit quiet, not really talking until later.  I've kept track of how many words he's saying (about 120) but he doesn't really put them together quite yet, except for the occasional "Shoes Mama", "I sowwwy Mama", and "Up Mama!"

Its still early so I'm not too worried, just curious.

  • That sounds about right.  Some kids will be way ahead of that, but if your DC can put together 2 and sometimes 3 words at 2 y/o, they're doing ok.  I worried about my DS too, but at 3 y/o he speaks plenty now.

  • That sounds right. I don't keep track of how many words ds says (it got to be too many) but I know it is over 100. He says the basic two word sentences and has said a couple three word sentences.

He does have a couple of friends that talk in complete sentences though (that are the same age if not a few weeks younger than him). They all develop there vocab at different paces.

Our pedi said that as long as they are consistently saying new words and have at least a few two word sentences, they are right on track.

  • How about 0?  DS will be 2 in January and has yet to say a single word. Crying

  • It really depends...my older DD barely talked at turning 2.  She said some words but didn't really communicate verbally much at that point & no real sentences.  I was worried for a long time, especially at her pronounciation (she was hard to understand), but at 3.5yrs I had her evaluated by a Speech Therapist at the prompting of her pre-school teacher & she was actually on par or ahead for her age.  The ST just said she needed to talk slower. Now I have a 22mo old that talks in sentences, repeats anything you say & can totally communicate verbally her wants & needs.  I did nothing different, they just naturally are very different.  If you are really worried you could have an Early Intervention person come eval him free usually as long as he's under 3.  Good Luck!
