Pregnant after a Loss

baby aspirin?

I had my D&C 42 days ago, but still no period. My doctor won't do a follow up until after I get it. My friends that have also had fertility issues/miscarriages keep telling me to be my own advocate, so I am trying. I have researched a lot and have spoken to so many women who are all in our boat. Many are on a very low dose of baby aspirin (81mg). These were not prescribed by my doctor, but I figure they can't hurt, right? Has anyone else tried them, or plan to? I'm 32 and my husband is 35.....I really don't want to keep waiting.  I was told that fertility specialists won't see me until I have 3 repeated miscarriages.  With my age, I am scared to wait that long.  I am clearly not a doctor, but I just don't see any harm in taking a baby aspirin daily either......any advice?  Thanks!!

Re: baby aspirin?

  • Sorry for your loss. If I were you, I would wait to follow up with your Ob and not take any medication without your doctor's consent. I'm not sure if this is your 1st or 2nd loss. If it's your 2nd, most RE's will see you. If it's your 1st, then yes, most doctor's won't do any kind of work up since miscarriages are quite common. Best of luck to you and all I can really say is talk to your doctor and follow all of his/her recommendations.

  • I think the 3 losses may be related to RLP testing, not fertility issues, and usually the rule of thumb is to see a specialist after one year of TTC under 35 and 6 months over. You can see my history in my siggy (I had one loss then sought help from an RE which resulted in this pregnancy through IVF). The RE you see will tell you whether or not you are a candidate or their clinic, but don't hold your breath waiting for your OB to give you a recommendation. I hung onto my OB for way too long...

I didn't need help getting AF started but did your dr monitor your hcg to 0 (or under 5)? There are things that can help jump start AF but I am not familiar with those. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

I am on baby aspirin related to blood clot disorders but I would not take them without my dr's recommendation and after a full panel has been done. It can cause ulcers and bleeding in your stomach if you have underlying issues.

GL to you - I know this sucks and I am sorry for your loss!

  • First, I am very sorry for your recent loss. I didn't get my period for 53 days after my first loss and D&C. The rule is to wait 60 days, then you can call and see if they'll give you something to jump start your cycle.

Second, baby aspirin is a medication I would not take without your doctor's OK. My OB put me on baby aspirin for this pregnancy after my two miscarriages in case I had a clotting disorder they didn't test for in my repeat loss panel. Aspirin is generally not approved for pregnancy and I wouldn't take it on your own without your doctor knowing.

Third, generally they won't test for reasons for recurrent pregnancy loss until after three miscarriages, although some doctors (like mine) will test after two. They look primarily for clotting disorders and autoimmune disorders. Sometimes all of that comes back okay and it's just bad luck (which was my "diagnosis"). If you have had trouble getting pregnant, you could certainly look into a consult with a fertility specialist, but I would not expect them to run any tests to determine possible causes of your miscarriage.

Like 4leggs said please don't start nd asprin regimin without consulting your Dr first it could cause problems and my not help if you do not have something that requires it. I do take a daily asprin but only began it after some blood work revealed that I have MTFHR which can cause clotting problems during pregnancy. If I did not have this I would Not be taking it.

  • If you want to learn more about being your own advocate, I would start with Reading "Trying Again" by dr. Sussman.

If you want more in depth info about testings and treatments, "Dr. Sher's book "preventing Miscarriages" is a good place to start too. Be aware though, it is really geared for women who have experienced multiple loss. I don't mean in anyway to make light of your loss, but there is normally a medical difference between a woman who has one loss and one who has three which is why they delay testing. The majority of women who experience a miscarriage go on to have a successful and uncomplicated second pregnancy without any intervention.

And Come on over to the TTCAL board, read through the blog in the header where there's lots of great info, lurk a little and join us.

  • I wouldn't start baby aspirin without the OK from your OB. Aspirin is one of those medications that can cause complications in a pregnancy, and really shouldn't be taken unless the go-ahead is given because of a clotting issue, or the high-likelihood of one.  I am on baby aspirin for a perceived clotting issue, despite never being tested, but my OB believes that it would do me more good than harm. I'm on progesterone for the same reason.

After my D&C, it took me about two months to get my period back. It was very, very frustrating waiting for it to come back. Don't dismay, it can be quite common for it to take 5-6 weeks to come back.

Best of luck to you! The TTCAL gals are fantastic, as are the gals here.

  • Hi! If it makes you feel better, I didn;t even ovultate until close to 70 days after my D&C. However, I DID get pregnant that cycle, with no AF in between.

My doctor put me on baby aspirin when I went in with spotting when I was about 5 weeks along and a total mess. She said it was a preemptive measure in case my last pregnancy had anything to do with clotting issues. I am still taking it and will be asking my high risk doctor if i should continue.

Sometimes ovulation after a D&C can take a long time so if I were you, and you are really anxious to see someone and feel like you are taking control of your situation (I know that was important for me) I would insist on an appointment or perhaps meet with another regular OB who are sometimes open to proactive approaches like starting you on baby aspirin even if you aren't pregnant yet.

Hope this helped in some way. I know how hard it is to be patient after a loss.

  • Thanks ladies!! AF arrived after 42 days and I go for my follow-up Monday!! Now I just need to try to figure out when to TTC again.....

  • As the others have said, definitely don't start taking something without your doctors knowledge. After my three losses (though my office only considers it two losses, because the first was a c/p) they agreed to do lots of testing on me and my H. Nothing came back abnormal. I did have one marker for MTHR but not two markers which indicates an issue. She did still prescribe me baby asprin and progesterone for the first 12 weeks. I will be on the baby asprin until 36 weeks.
