Preemies

Good response DH. Feel free to use

When we were at a restaurant on Sunday morning a very intrusive woman kept commenting on Lila's size, how she couldn't believe a baby that small is 3 months old, how her grandson must weigh twice as much, etc. DH looked her point blank and asked, "Why are you so concerned with my child's size"? She shut up and left us alone.
So proud of him since he didn't get angry or upset, just put the onus back on her. Feel free to use when you are confronted with a similarly inappropriate commenter.

His response = perfect! nbsp;I wish I could come up with stuff like that on the spot. nbsp;Usually I think of things after stuff has happened. nbsp;I think I'm going to whip that one out next time someone decides to comment on my kid's size.
. Please use this response. The words could be changed to apply to so many different situations where people mostly older women from my experience comment on things that are none if their damned business and do not affect them.

  • Good one! We don't really get comments anymore, but over his first year I had some good comebacks depending on my mood. Sometimes I just said he was a NB for age...or his adjusted age. Other times I'd be snappy, while others I'd try to explain prematurity because it can also be a learning moment. For as much as we all complain about not being understood I think it's important to remember that and try to be patient with people who don't understand. It sucks feeling like the zoo, though.

in theory I agree with you about educating people about prematurity, However this did not seem like a teachable moment and we just wanted to enjoy brunch while Lila was content.

  • Great Response! Someone from my work heard me talking about LO being born at 29 weeks and she pulled me aside and said "Can I ask you a personal question about your son?" Which I will admit the warning bells went off. Then she asked me "I know he was a preemie but was he born with skin?" WTF! I dead panned and said "No feathers" Seriously! skin? SMH she is in her late 30's and pregnant with twins! She needs a book on baby development...and fast lol!

I had my mother take me to pay a bill and I explained to the lady why I wasnt able to make it by the date it was due (having the baby). While I knew she meant well this lady actually asked me did he have eyeballs and ears... all I could do was blink slowly and reply with a yes...

I bet a lot of people will be amazed at the number of children and adults who were born preemies who are healthy and happy today!

It amazes me how ignorant people can be! I know before I had LO I would have been scared to see a NICU baby. It is tough to see, especially when it is your baby! So I think people just assume the worse!
