Hiccups/ Spit Up

Just yesterday my LO started having hiccups throughout the day. I really mean throughout the day. I know they don't hurt him, but they wake him up at times from his sleep and make it harder for him to go to sleep. I think they also make him spit up. He hardly ever spat up milk before (he's only a week old), but now after every feeding he spits up. I'm pretty sure it's because of the hiccups. We do have a doctor appointment tomorrow and plan to bring it up then. Should I be concerned?

Re: Hiccups/ Spit Up

  • My LO was doing the same and the pedi. said he has refllux.  He wasn't prescibe any meds because he wasn't losing weight and the spit up wasn't projectile. Try sitting him up for at least 15 mins after eating. Laying down right after eating could cause them to spit-up also.

  • I agree with keeping the baby upright after eating for about 20-30 mins. If the baby doesn't seem in pain or uncomfortable than he's probably ok. If there is fussing during or after the eating, or when spitting up then I would let the pedi know, maybe it's reflux. There are "happy spitters" and it's normal for some spit up. For hiccups, it happens a lot in the beginning. L also has reflux so she hiccuped a lot. Sometimes gripe water helps with them.

  • My little guy has the hiccups all the time too.  He seems to get them right after feedings and especially when DH and I are trying to go to bed.  Then they end up keeping him awake and crying...which leads to more feeding and then we're all up another hour.  I'm hoping the hiccups get less frequent with age!
