Multiples

New here...with a question

Hi there... I've lurked a few times but decided to "come out" and say hello!

DH & I have a 2.5 yo daughter and recently found out we're expecting twins in April.  I'm a little over 11 weeks along.  At the early ultrasound (about 8 weeks), we saw two sacs & two strong heartbeats.  Baby B's sac was quite small, though, by comparison to Baby A.  We went back last week, and both A & B had grown, were both moving and again had strong heartbeats.  B still has a smaller sac, but both the ultrasound tech and the doctor seemed optimistic.

Did any of you have a twin/multiple with a much smaller sac?  Did it seem to keep evening out in size?  I don't feel like my doctor has given me much information, despite my questions about what this means, so I'm just curious about how common this is & what the possibilities might be at this point...

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

  • During the first ultrasound, they measured exactly the same. Last week, they measured 3 days apart (B smaller/younger).

  • My baby b was measuring about 3 days smaller all the way until about 16 weeks. But now they are the same. I remember being worried though because baby b's sac was smaller and a "weird" shape according to the doctor. It turned out to be fine. The md explained that since they are di/di, they are completely different babies and so it makes sense that they would grow at different rates. Are your's di/di?

  • My Baby B had a smaller sac.  It stayed smaller (but did catch up a little) up until my NT scan, at which time they stopped measuring the sac because the sac itself isn't relevant anymore. Then they just measured fluid levels. It was no big deal!  My Baby B is a healthy 2 month old now and he just passed up his sister (Baby A) in weight!

  • Thanks so much for the responses.  While I know that each situation is different -- and what will be, will be -- it's also nice to hear others' experiences.

Ours are di/di.  At the first appointment, the discussion about the smaller sac seemed to be a significant concern, but at last week's appointment, the doctor seemed much more optimistic.  We're choosing optimism, of course!

  • Our baby B measured smaller all along and was born 10oz smaller then his brother...but just as healthy! Best wishes for a long and healthy pregnancy!
