Pregnant after 35

RN intake appointment today!

I didn't make it this far last time, so I'm very excited!

I'm hoping I can finagle a 3rd beta so that I can decide if I need to continue with the progesterone supplements all the way through to week 8. My insurance doesn't cover it and each box is $150.

I asked MH to get his family's health history from his mom and man-oh-man, does it STINK! Lots of heart disease, alcoholism, diabetes, eye deficiencies, etc. Let's hope this baby only gets his/her sense of humour and good-natured happiness from MH!

Anyhow-- anything specific that you think I should be asking/discovering from the RN during this initial visit?

Re: RN intake appointment today!

  • Daniele... I'm so freaking happy for you - it's ridiculous!  I think I'm more excited for you than myself!

I hear ya on family history, except it's my family's!  Heart disease, cancer, thyroid issue, MS,  high blood pressure, diabetes all around.... I always tell my mom.. thanks for the great genes!

Good luck on your visit and can't wait to hear updates.

  •  I didn't have a nurse visit but I just filled out the huge paperwork with family history and my history at my first dr. visit.  The doctor kind of went over everything and since I have been through this several times I didn't have many questions.  Maybe they could also do a progesterone check to see if you should continue supps.  I just stopped mine a few days ago but I never had it checked, I was just taking it as a precaution.  Good luck today!

  • Thanks, Ladies!

They had all my allergies, which we reviewed. And I asked the RN to ask the doc about my progesterone supps-- not only does the doc think I should continue them through my 8 week mark, but she wants me to stay on them until 10 weeks and then start weaning down so that I'm off them around 12 weeks. *sigh* Being 35+ is expensive!!

I also had them take my blood pressure, and I'm thankfully still within my normal range, although I was on the higher end of my norm. Still no worries about preeclampsia, though. Yay!

I also asked them to monitor my thyroid (they stopped including it with the normal b/w 2 weeks ago) because I was questioning previous docs who felt I didn't need intervention but I'm on the very high end of normal and not far off my sister's TSH and she takes synthroid. And my TSH has been rising over the last couple of years.

So I feel like it went well, if it was somewhat anticlimactic. Now, I have to try and be patient while waiting for my 1st U/S on the 22nd!

  • Glad it went well. Don't feel bad, I just stopped progesterone on Sat at 13 weeks and my progesterone levels were fine! My OB is very conservative, but I don't mind b/c all previous pregnancies I took pretromium which I think is much worse.

  • I know that I am late but this may be good for your next appointment.  You may want to go carefully through your medications list with your doctor.  I was on singulair for asthma.  My pulmonologist, RE, PCP, and former OB all said that it was OK.  My new OB is very conservative and he recommend that I stop taking it because he feels that the drug is too new to fully understand any complications.  I was also on iodine for a slight thyroid problem.  He ran my labs again and decided that I don't need to take it.

I know that the progesterone supplements are expensive for you but I felt better when I was taking them.  Like I knew that I was doing everything that I could to keep my baby safe.  The nerve wracking part was when they told me to stop taking them.  My RE gave me some samples because I did not have enough to take me to the end and it was easier for them than calling in a new prescription.  It would not hurt to ask if they have some samples you could have.

  • I am counting down the days till your first u/s b/c that is also when I can stop the progesterone shots :)  Sorry they are costing you a fortune.  But just know that they are going to a good cause, and just tell your future child they owe you big time Stick out tongue
