Sleeping

Does or when did your LO sleep thru the night with no feedings? I think it's still too early yet at 6 wks but friends say that once they hit 10lbs what their Ped said you can let them sleep thru the night. And my one friend established a routine for a week that got her son sleeping thru the night from 8 to 8. She would give him a bath and feed him then if he woke up in the middle of the night she would soothe him by holding him for a few min or give him his pacifier. After a week he slept thru the night. I feel like my DD doesn't just get up at 4am because its a routine but because she is hungry and I would feel like I'm starving her. So how did you get your LO to sleep or did they do it in their own? Also her last feeding before bed is between 10 and 11 but she is always soo tired that she barely takes 2 to 3oz. But I think if I skipped that feeding and made her last feeding at 7 she wouldn't make it til 4am which she does constantly now. Thanks!

Re: Sleeping

  • I feed DS when hes hungry, even if thats a few times a night.  He is almost 12 pounds and there is no way that Id let him go with out feeding if he was hungry. From everything I have been told at this young age, when they are hungry you need to feed them, when they cry you need to be there.  As they say at this age you can not spoil a baby.

I think the people that get their LO sleeping through the night are the lucky ones, I don't think that there is anything you can do (at least thats what my pedi said at his 2 month check up)

  • My lo was consistently sleeping 10 hours by 2 months.  However, by 4 months he was having the wakefuls and cutting teeth.  Then he was getting up once or twice a night, sometimes for hours at a kick!  We had to sleep train at 6 months and now he's finally sttn again.  It'll happen when she's ready.  Good Luck!

  • My baby is almost 10 weeks and he's probably 13lbs at least and he still wakes once a night for a diaper change and to eat.  He has slept through the night twice and they were about a week apart.  When he wakes up in the middle of the night, he's hungry.  I can't just soothe him back to sleep.

You have to remember that every baby is different so what worked for your friend may not work for you.  Her baby is totally different from yours.  So even if you copy her routine, you won't necessarily have the same results.

From what I've read, babies set their own routines and they will gradually start sleeping longer and longer on their own.  Once the baby is consistently sleeping through the night, then if he/she wakes, you could just soothe them back to sleep for now, it sounds like you need to keep up the middle of the night feeding.

  • Babies STTN when they are ready. There isn't a magic weight or age. I can't imaging leaving DS in his crib to cry at 2 months old. He would have starved!  DS started STTN all on his own at 6 months.

Pretty much all of this. STTN is a milestone like any other and you can't rush it. My oldest son was doing pretty long stretches at 8 weeks (like 8 hours or so), but my newborn is still up every 45 minutes at night, so I know there's light at the end of this very tired tunnel :'p

Be patient! They'll all get there in the end!
