FTM needs help!

My LO is 7 weeks old. He was doing great for the first 2-3 weeks...eating great, pooping great, sleeping 4hrs at a time. Then about 3 weeks ago he started having trouble pooping. He was miserable! Talked to our pediatrician and she said that he was otherwise healthy and to give him a little mineral oil in each bottle just to get things going, and to just be patient that he would grow out of it. We also changed from Similac Advanced to the Sensitive (which doesn't fill him up for long...eating about every two hrs), and started using the Dr Brown's bottles to cut back on gas. That worked...now he has pretty regular bms and they are soft. But he is still miserable. I don't think he is colicky bc he usually only fusses while he is eating or when he is straining to have a bm. As a first time mom am I over reacting thinking that there might be something wrong? Anyone ever had this trouble?

Re: FTM needs help!

  • Seems like this is a very common thing with newborns. We are going through this as well with our 5 week old son. Went to the doctor last night for a 1 month checkup and I brought it up.

    No big deal....really!!!

I brought up the straining and everything, and she was not concerned at all.  I had her show me on his tummy what it would feel like if he was in serious trouble with the pooping, so I now know hwat to look for in that area.

Doctor said the thing with the newborns is that they don't know that by relaxing the process of having a bm will go smoother.  We can simulate a bm if we want by continuing the bicycle kicks or by using a q-tip with some lub and rubbing the tip on the anus.

As long as when he poops it is not hard and pebble-like you should be alright.
