Baby Names

Too similar for sibs??

At this point, Mom's front-runner for a baby boy is Evan. The problem? My only other child is Ethan. Personally, while a little cutesy, the two together don't bother me. Tell me, am I being blinded by my love for Evan? You think we could really pull off Ethan and Evan without a comment every time we introduce our boys?

Re: Too similar for sibs??

  • I think they are too similar. Can you use Evan as a middle name?

  • I think Ethan and Evan is fine. Both are fine, strong names. A lot of people choose the same letters for their children.

  • Evan is one of my faves, but I would say they are too close :(
  • I personally don't think they are too similar, my cousins are Ethan and Even (they are brothers) and I've never thought anything of it!
  • I don't think it's bad but may be confusing for you. Yell out "Ethan and Evan" a few times and see if it's a tongue twister

  • I knew twins in hs named Evan and Eric.  Ethan is a little closer because of the 'an,' but I don't think it's bad.
  • They are very similar, but if it doesn't bother you, go for it!  I love both names!

  • I don't think they are too similar - I like both :)
  • If it were me, I'd find it a little too similar, with them both starting in E and ending in An and having the same syllable structure (at least one E is long and the other is short). But I wouldn't think it was weird if you chose it-- it's just a question of whether it bothers you. People definitely show patterns in the names they like!
  • I think it's fine, but I may be a little biased. My daughters are Ally and Aubrey. =) Evan is on our short list for boys! =)

  • Yes too similar.  People will mix them up all the time.

  • Considering I am always confusing the names Evan and Ethan, I would say they are way to similar. I feel like they would forever being like "no, I'm Evan. He's Ethan." and vice versa

All of this. I personally would not do it but, I would not side eye someone who did.

  • My sons name is Evan and I've honestly considered naming a future DS Ethan.

  • I think both names are great names but I do think they're too similar.

Not because of any "weirdness" but for purely practical reasons. I think you'd be up for a lifetime of you being tongue tied, and the boys not responding to you and saying, "oh i thought you called for Evan/Ethan"

  • I think they're fine. Just because they both end in "an" wouldn't make a different to me. Yes, they both start with "E"- but tons of parents do that. I went to high school with a couple families whose names all started with the same letter, like J... Jerrica, Jennica, Jenalyn, Jamie... Look at the Kardashian bunch... Kim, Khloe, Kourtney, Kylie, Kendall... lol..

  • I actually taught a "Evan/Ethan" sibling set. Evan being then older brother, not that it matters at all, I just didn't want to give the impression they were twins. :) I really liked it, I think they go together just fine. Also I would love to use either name  but my husband won't go for either, ugh!

  • I just want to add after reading the other posts: your going to call them by each others name no matter what you name him! My mom just gave up eventually and started using "you!" for all of us! Haha! And I've even done it with my own daughter calling her by my youngest sisters name which are nothing alike. (Liela and Billie)

  • Thanks for the feedback! I do love the name, and I can't seem to come with anything that I like near as much. DH said yes to the name, so we will have to see come May! It may be moot as we are still Team Green!

And for the record, I constantly call my own son Andrew (which is nothing like Ethan, but is the name of his cousin!). Also, my FIL always calls my son Evan, which is the name of a childhood friend, which would be pretty confusing if we threw an Evan into the mix!

  • Yes, I think they are too close for siblings. I would be constantly tripping over those names trying to call out to my children.
