Its not too different from a regular internal. It takes maybe a minute longer. Some women say it hurts a lot, others say its only uncomfortable. I had it done with DS1 at 6 days overdue. It wasn't painful at all for me; my MW swept my membranes and stretched me from 2 cms to 4. I started cramping right away and was having contractions the next morning. I had it done with DD at 39 weeks. It was more uncomfortable and completely ineffective.
As PP said it seems that everyone has a different experience. I had it done at 40w with DS and it was extremely uncomfortable and it didn't work. All it did was make me crampy the rest of the day, but no real contractions and it definitely didn't send me into labor.
ETA: I just realized you're 39 weeks. I personally wouldn't do it before 40 weeks. I only say that because there's a risk that they could accidentally break your water during the process, which of course puts you on the clock to have the baby. I personally would choose to wait til I was further along before trying it again if I wanted to go that route. JMO, but wanted you to know about the possibility of membrane rupture.
I'm thinking of having this done at my next appt. Best wishes!
Question : Did anyone have their hubby with them for this?
I had it done at 39wks and 40wks with DD. Hubby was at both appointments. The first time was much more uncomfortable than the second time. Neither sent me into labor as I was induced just shy of 41wks because of office policy. I've changed care providers and my MW will be stripping my membranes at my 39wk appointment but only because we're hoping I deliver this weekend since my hubby will be home for four days before leaving the country for 9+mos.
Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!
I've had it done twice and I didn't really find it uncomfortable at all. Felt like a regular internal. If my OB hadn't told me that he was about to do it during my internal, I probably wouldn't have noticed because it wasn't anything different from what usually happens during an internal.
My birth enter has a joke about they strip your membranes, send you home to have sex, and you come back the next day to have your baby. Something about the hormones in semen softening the cervix and encouraging dilation, and orgasm causing contractions. Good Luck!
