Cloth Diapering

DS bum looks better in sposies

I'm sad to admit it but I think ds's skin looks better in sposies. We went away for the weekend and used sposies and the constant red is gone. He has never had a true rash, just red irratation, but it is almost daily in cloth. When he poops it is always red for a while even though we change him right away. The sposies made even that go away by the next change and we didn't use any creams except once. :( I'm thinking about stopping.

  • Do what you need to do for your LO and family's wellbeing.

If you want to keep using cloth, then it may be a matter of finding out what works for you and what doesn't. What type of cds are you using? Some people love the stay-dry of pockets. My LO does way better in cotton, despite the wetness factor. Coconut oil works wonders for us in terms of keeping rashes away. I've also noticed my LO is sometimes 'red' because of the fabric pressing against her bum.

    Good luck!

  • What detergent do you use?

    I'd try something else.

We have a bit of everything, I was trying to find something before that would make it so he wasn't red but it seem regardless of what we use (fleece/suedecloth/cotton/bamboo). He gets cj's every change (coconut worked about the same, mil wanted to use cjs though... and she watches him during the day.

This may be why actually, I use all f&c.  It's the only thing I can use or dh gets rashes (even from the "clean rinsing detergents", just from the residue from the diaper loads) so I don't have other options.  I switched out all the microfiber inserts for cotton, hemp and bamboo and haven't had stink issues but maybe they are still not getting clean enough.

  • I would strip and switch detergents.

All F&C is not a CD safe detergent.  There are many other F&C detergents out there that your DH might be able to use --- have you tried something like soap nuts or tiny bubbles?

I have not used either of those, but have tried allens, fuzzibunz and country save trying.  He isn't willing to try anything else (and I can understand it can take 6-8 weeks to clear up his rashes :/)

  • Initially, when I switched to cloth we had a lot of issues, and I could definitely say my lo's bum looked better in spouses.

She is very sensitive to being wet at all, and therefore doesn't do well in prefolds.  She needs the dryness of pockets or some all in ones.  In fact, we're slowly getting more and more hemp/bamboo inserts having those make her butt look the best.  We also put emab diaper cream on her with every change as a barrier.

It took a while, but we no longer have the issues we once had with cloth.  Now, her butt looks better in cloth.

  • Not to go off on a tangent about detergents, but I'm so confused about what is ok and what isn't.  I saw on a cloth diaper detergent chart that All F&C was ok to use (it gave it 3 out of 4 stars) on cloth diapers.  I've seen several on here who use Tide powder, which the same chart said not to use (well, one out of four stars with). I've also seen a couple people on here say Rockin Green is for the birds and I thought that was specifically meant for CD.

    So.  Confused.

I was very confused before too. Really it comes down to what works for you. Everyone has an opinion and a lot is based on the type of water you have (why some people love this and others hate it etc...)  I've gone with the theory that they are still clothes.  I use the recommended about of detergent (makes no sense to me to use less, you wouldn't do that on your dirty clothes would you) but I do do an extra short cycle to make sure there is none left on the diapers.  So basically, try what you want and if it works great, if not, try something else!

  • I use Tiny Bubbles on cloth diapers, soap nuts powder and baking soda on my clothes and on DD's clothes, and DH prefers to use Gain on his clothes.

It doesn't have to be the same for everything.
